Exercise helps improve depression and anxiety. With the Ben Greenwood lab, we wondered if irisin can help improve depression and anxiety in a rodent model. Yes, it looks promising. Feel free to check our preprint.

A further point: serious depression is not well treated and is the leading cause of suicide. While exercise is effective for helping mild to moderate depression, we hope that by turning to higher levels of irisin, we can help with more severe disease.
Another great annual retreat goes in the books. Our rule is you cant talk about what you work on, and it was so interesting. Props to the lab techs who each gave a great talk. Rockport is so lovely in the spring!
It is interesting to note, that much of the effects of irisin can be ascribed to the subsequent production of IL-33 by stromal cells within the adipose tissues. We never imagined such a mechanism in 2012! Big congrats to Mu and Gang for these determined efforts.
When we discovered irisin in 2012 (Bostrom et al), we described its actions in terms of the browning of the white fat and anti-diabetic effects. Here, in collaboration with the Mathis lab, we re-examine this in mechanistic detail. nature.com/articles/s42255-0…
Cardiac PGC1a is required for adaptations of the heart to exercise (in mice). A wonderful collaboration with the lab of Tony Rosenzweig. Sumeet is off to start his won lab at UVa (congrats!) nature.com/articles/s44161-0…
