I stopped by a cafe near a local supermarket and several retail shops for food and coffee. When I asked for a bottle of Rwenzori water, they handed me a bill of 5,000 UGX more than double the 2,000 UGX price at the shops just a few steps away. Overcharging basic items is not clever business or innovation. It is just a foolish way to tell a customer, "todangamu" (never step foot in here again). Message received. I'll never stop there again.

𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 While public discussions here frequently focus on poor governance in the context of human rights, public service delivery, corruption, and political transitions, the impact of governance on natural resource management, especially fisheries, is rarely highlighted. Our recent research reveals that governance is a primary driver shaping the current state of fisheries in Uganda. A well-governed fishery addresses the needs of resource users, incorporates stakeholder input into decision-making, and relies on an enforcement system that is trusted and perceived as fair. In Uganda, the opposite is true. Corruption is rampant. For example, fishers often bribe enforcement officers to bypass regulations and be allowed to fish illegally. Not even the armed officers from UPDF are immune to this. This creates a persistent cycle of illegal fishing and undermines incentives for conservation efforts such as protecting vital fish breeding grounds. Fish stocks become depleted affecting fishers' yields in the short-term and the resilience of fisheries in the long-run. No intervention, including the deployment of armed military officers will succeed unless the underlying governance structures are reformed. I used to see posts here warning people that HUT 8 was a scam. I did not take them seriously because I hadn't heard anyone mention it in real life. Today I was surprised when I found out that some of my coworkers, including one I share an office with, were actively involved and are now coming to terms with losing their money. What is funny is that most of them were all brought into it by an intern who joined us about six weeks ago.

This bird is African Openbill (Anastomus lamelligerus) or something related. When I saw this video, I remembered sighting the same bird performing the same behavior on the river Nile. I tried to find out why the bird would be doing that. It turns out that this behavior called the spread wing posture, is performed while sunning for purposes of regulating temperature (thermoregulation). It is said that during the performance, the bird will sometimes excrete on its legs for similar purposes. Nature.

A nation that criminalizes criticism and suppresses free expression stifles its own ability to innovate, compromises the quality of its public services, and erodes public trust. Such conditions slow down genuine development and prolong the exposure of citizens to poor quality life.
