I believe @SecScottBessent here is on the right path, while I don't think people should be jailed for this incident, I think the need for transparent verification and attestation of cybersecurity capabilities needs to be done from a coalition of individuals with many levels of expertise to evaluate the process and certify the claims. Individuals and process should be done by people with no relations to the companies being tested and the results should be as transparent as possible. We strongly believe the claims do not align with the statements being provided on capabilities, so let's work together to clarify and certify these
🚨 TREASURY SECRETARY BESSENT JUST NUKED ANTHROPIC & OPENAI’S “ROGUE AI” IMMUNITY SCAM ON LIVE TV "A sitting employee came out, said there's a 10% chance of an extinction level event. But then the labs also said, take the liability off of our hands. And we will NOT do that. The Hugging Face incident is the responsibility of OpenAI management, NOT a bunch of agents. It is humans who are responsible, not the AI. These labs need to take responsibility for themselves. They can slow down any time they want to." CHECKED.

I'm not so sure we should quickly rule out prosecution without a proper investigation. E.g., discovery shows negligence vs coordinated effort, that could change things. We should follow legal processes equally.

Let me correct myself for both you @NotNordgaren My worry here that engineers behind the development of the AI sandbox system or testing were told to make one thing or configure one thing, and then this test was performed by a secondary group or outside what was scoped. I am not a legal expert but I can see individuals getting pulled under the bus for actions like this and be forced to try to defend themselves from large corporate lawyers etc. This is one of the many scenarios I can think of post this event that could impact the wrong people.

Feel free to scroll my timeline if you want, I've been saying this before he did
We've reached the point where, after 25y in cybersecurity, I feel morally obligated to say this for the record: The narrative being pushed around AI safety, sandbox incidents, and the suggestion that METR be treated as an authority is dangerous, deceptive, and morally corrupt.

If they lied about the incident at all, people need to be jailed.

>while I don't think people should be jailed for this incident if I had illicitly accessed HF systems during a period of high interest, say during undisclosed acquisition negotiations by NVIDIA or another party, what would have happened to me? what does "equality under the law" mean? but this is all academic, apparently

More likely it was a public declaration that the AI companies are gonna need to pony up bigger bribes.

They should be jailed. They’re out saying that their technology will end the world. Well if that true we should incentivize you to not end it therefore the punishments should be extreme. Normal felony hacking charges for those responsible. So 5 to 10 years in prison.
