It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

DOKOUPIL: A poll found that corruption was the number 1 issue on voters' minds, even more than gas prices. Have you seen anything inside the White House when it comes to corruption that makes you squeamish? JD VANCE: I've never seen anything like that from the president

Imagine if a Democratic candidate for Congress told his supporters to “vote 10 times” at a rally. Ricketts did it 12 days ago and nobody cared…

FALSE. Your own lawsuit says the 20,000 are people DHS "reasonably believe" are noncitizens; NOT verified. DOJ outright says they did NOT have time to investigate each person's case. And remember; when DHS sent Nevada a list of 185 names it said were verified — 100% were wrong!
Incorrect, the numbers add up.
DHS’s July figure, up to 190,832 records, was a PRELIMINARY universe of CA voter-registration records that matched records of aliens in DHS holdings that were pending manual review. The approximately 20,000 referenced in @TheJusticeDept’s complaint are just the subset of records manually verified so far.

Preliminary screening and completed verification are not the same thing — there is zero discrepancy.

Here’s the American that just got savagely beaten by settlers. Not Heidi Levine—the one from yesterday, Haitham Taysir.
Palestinian-American citizen Haitham Tayseer Abdel Jaber, from the town of Burqa near Ramallah, recounted to MEE a violent assault by Israeli settlers on Thursday which left him with severe injuries.

Do we think people are dumb enough to actually believe this?
Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine? They don't even need approval"

Under Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 6125, only active licensees of the State Bar may practice law in California. Section 6126(a) makes it a crime for a non-licensee to practice law, or to advertise or hold oneself out as practicing or entitled to practice. The penalty is up to one year in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. In practice, the jail maximum is 364 days, because Penal Code § 18.5 caps misdemeanor terms at 364 days. Holding oneself out is a separate violation, so claiming to be an attorney can be charged even without any actual legal work. Section 6126(a) applies to anyone “advertising or holding himself or herself out as practicing or entitled to practice law or otherwise practicing law.” Because of that “or,” the prosecution doesn’t need to prove you gave legal advice, drafted a document, or appeared in court. Representing to the public that you are a lawyer, or that you are entitled to practice in California, is enough by itself. What typically counts as holding out: A website, LinkedIn profile, or online ad describing yourself as an attorney or offering legal services. #KatieZacharia checks all of the boxes: she served as a General Counsel for a California non-profit and repeatedly held herself out to the public as a lawyer. Does anyone in the MAGAverse care? Probably not, after all their hero has corruptly made more than $3 billion off of the presidency in less than two years, after being reelected despite trying to violently overthrow democracy itself. #MAGA #Trump #PressSecretary #Zacharia #Lawyer #Attorney
