100 years old. Still the sharpest mind in the room. Jean-Pierre Serre, youngest Fields Medalist in history (age 27), first Abel Prize winner, and the “Mozart of mathematics,” turned 100 on September 15 and is still lecturing, still writing on the blackboard, still shaping the field. Happy 100th to the greatest living mathematician. The rest of us are just trying to keep up.

If you want to know whether a system is being driven or at equilibrium, you need its probability current. Getting this from actual dynamical trajectory data has been the hard part. To help solve this I've been developing a Delaunay-Voronoi Fokker-Planck (DVFP) instrument. DVFP turns scattered, irregular, time-ordered phase-space observations into an empirical Fokker-Planck description. The distinction is simple: Geometry tells us what is nearby. Time tells us what happens next, and these are handled properly in this construction. From here we obtain density, drift, diffusion, and probability current, which is what detailed balance and entropy production are built from. La nouvelle est passée presque totalement inaperçue dans les médias français, en raison du Mondial de foot et des incendies : l’intelligence artificielle a réussi à déchiffrer entièrement un rouleau de papyrus carbonisé d’Herculanum, aussi fragile que de la cendre de cigarette, sans le dérouler et sans même y toucher ! On y a découvert un traité philosophique sur le stoïcisme. Il a fallu des trésors d’ingéniosité et de technologie pour parvenir à ce résultat. Le rêve est donc devenu réalité : bientôt, on pourra lire en un temps record les centaines de rouleaux de cette bibliothèque calcinée par le Vésuve il y a 2000 ans, et la littérature gréco-latine s’enrichira d’autant de textes inédits, de nouvelles tragédies ou épopées peut-être. Dans cet été déprimant, voilà un vrai rayon de lumière. Vive la science !
