Fully admitting that I have a lot of my family's money tied up in it (because doing otherwise would be poor stewardship of our finances), I genuinely think the stock market is a horrible idea that should be entirely abolished.
Putting money in the stock market is gambling. It's gambling that has a good track record, sure, and everyone likes to think they can do better than average--but if course we can't. Even experts will admit that the only safe way to use it is low-cost index funds.
And yet, pragmatically, it's the only realistic way today to put away money for retirement. If you just save money in a mattress, its value depletes fast due to inflation: that $10k you put away ten years ago is nothing now. You *must* earn a high yield yearly, or it's *gone*.
It looks like we'll be removing and replacing the flooring in this section of the basement. Fortunately that will likely be the extent of the damage, and insurance is covering it. (They won't cover the $1600 plumbing bill to fix the pipe itself, though for some reason.)
Tractor is now out of winter mode (plow, chains) and back in summer mode (mower deck).
Whoever designed this tractor: please never design anything else. Please.
