Primary elections are not public elections. They're government-funded private auditions.
Before 1900, they didn't exist. Party bosses picked candidates in back rooms. Primaries were the Progressive Era reform to break that up.
It didn't break anything up. It just moved the back room.
In 2024, 7% of American voters decided 87% of Congress in primaries, months before November. The general election was theater.
And who paid for that selection process? Taxpayers. We fund the internal nomination contests of two private organizations that aren't required to represent us and aren't accountable to us.
California tried the "fix" top-two primary. Put everyone on one ballot, advance the top two. In the 2026 governor's race, 60+ candidates ran. The result: almost certainly a Democrat vs. Republican in November. Same outcome, more cost, and every third-party and independent candidate eliminated before the real election even starts.
Top-two doesn't open the system. It adds a round that independent candidates can't win.
One general election. All candidates on the ballot. Highest turnout, full choice, no gatekeeping. Let every candidate earn it in front of the whole electorate.
The parties don't want this because they lose the filter. That's the strongest argument for it.
