This always makes my ordinary little English garden feel rather exotic. Fatsia Japonica in full bloom!

Afternoon walk, this time under the canal & up onto the other side! Swan holding up the flow 馃き, then on towards the boatyard. (A peaceful break from the current world mayhem!)

The temps are down into single figures in the 'shire - I've 'Winterized' my wardrobe & 'vac-packed' my Summer-wear - the fluffy socks are in play! Enjoying all things 'maple-flavoured' & the purpose of crocheting (yet more!) blankets is to stay cosy as I get creative with yarn!

I'm missing the 'glory' of the Autumn on the green from last year. 馃檨 Sadly, the high winds a few months ago damaged the tree so badly it became dangerous & had to be cut down. Now all we have is a stump. 馃檨

Fatsia Japonica getting into it's seasonal bloom! Such a show-off! Wait until those 'candelabra' flower heads begin to explode!

Escaping from the doomscrolling & political shenanigans -out for a post-lunch wander from the house. Across the road & saunter down to the water's edge & there it is - ah, England! Autumn sunshine & the gentle chug-chug-chug of a narrowboat on the Oxford Canal. 馃

'The Good Life' is alive & well, here in 'the shires'! Thursday we prepped another load of home-grown tomatoes for the freezer. Today @rootsinjoy made Bramble jelly from the fruits we foraged on our walks! 馃構

In this crazy world of gender-bending, Meryl Streep is to be the voice of Aslan, the lion, in the Greta Gerwig 'imagining' of "The Magician's Nephew". Here, an excellent slap-back, in line with another of C.S.Lewis' masterpieces!
My dear Wormwood, You still think in terms of churches and arguments. That is why you fail. The churches can be left standing. What must be spoiled is the literature that taught the young to love the Enemy before they could define Him. Narnia is one of the more irritating of those books. Children meet Aslan first as adventure and only later discover they have been handling Christ. That is dangerous. Direct attack only makes the stories more precious. So we do not ban them. We adapt them. Give the Voice to a so-called celebrated actress. Leave the mane. Leave the pronouns. Then the thing that was a male Christ-supposition becomes a prestige performance. The story remains famous; the meaning becomes negotiable. In a generation the story will still be beloved, but the beloved thing will no longer be Lewis鈥檚 Lion. It will be the version that flatters the age. That is how the Enemies literature is destroyed without the vulgarity of a bonfire. Keep the title. Change the sound. When the children hear Aslan, let them hear the present century speaking through Him. Once that habit is formed, the Enemies stories survive as brands. Their doctrine does not. Do not call it persecution. Call it interpretation. The patients prefer that word, and it does our work admirably. Your affectionate uncle, SCREWTAPE

The gift that keeps on giving - another harvest of tomatoes, prep'ed for the freezer! 馃馃構 The 'not-quite-ripe' ones will paper-bagged & put in the airing cupboard to finish ripening. Meanwhile, I'm checking those still 'on-the-vine' daily, before the first frosts come!

Living near the Oxford canal, our regular walks involve seeing many narrowboats chugging along or moored up & the names painted on their sides can vary from quaint to cryptic - but this one always makes me chuckle! 馃き

As we commemorate the Battle of Britain today, let us never forget the sacrifice made for us to live in peace - they played their part, now it's our turn to stand up & defend Britiain!

Lord, bless us this day, whatever it holds for each of us; for what has been, or is around us now, or is yet to come - please give us Your peace in our hearts. Amen.

Morning walk down to the bridge over the River Avon. The water's dropped so much in the drought, some daring soul has created a mini 'Stonehenge'! It will be interesting to see how it fares when the winter deluge sets in & the swollen river's running in full spate!

'Maple syrup' season has arrived - we feel obliged to partake! (& as I had a 'free' drink voucher, the Costa Barista suggested I have a larger one - egged on by @rootsinjoy !)

Prepping some of the home-grown tomatoes to make sauce & stock the freezer. First lot cooking - a few left over, but there's still several dozen to harvest! 馃構
