2025 was a good year for American households, the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows, with real household median income rising to $87,460, the highest on record, while the percent of the population below the poverty line fell to 10.2 percent, a record low after 2019’s 10.5 percent. The news came even as the unemployment level rose slightly from 6.9 million in December 2024 to 7.5 million in December 2025, making 2025’s gains largely the product of higher earnings. Even with those numbers, labor markets are still fairly tight with the unemployment rate averaging 4.3 percent — the average annual unemployment rate since 1948 has been 5.67 percent — amid the continuing Baby Boomer retirement wave and shrinking migration. The combination of labor markets still tight on a postwar basis and shrinking inflation did the work of boosting incomes on a real basis. But looking forward, 2026 may see a slight reversal of some of those trends. While seasonally adjusted average weekly earnings nominally increased 3.4 percent from December 2024 to December 2025 and consumer prices only grew by 2.6 percent, so far in 2026, with eight months on the books, average weekly earnings are up 2.6 percent so far, while seasonally adjusted consumer prices have already jumped 2.5 percent amid rising energy costs as global supply chains are destabilized out of Ukraine, Russia and the Middle East. While there is still time left in the year for a reversal of prices — June and July showed what that could look like as the U.S. and Iran were drafting their memorandum of understanding — its rapid violation as Iran began firing on oil tankers and other oil and gas infrastructure in the region have thrown that somewhat into doubt even as President Donald Trump predicted the war in Iran would end soon after the Congressional midterm elections.

While Democrats have maintained a lead in most midterm polls over the past three months, there are signals that the blue wave could be somewhat blunted in November. An NBC News survey shows Democrats ahead by less than they were at the same point in 2018, and a New York Times poll from Maine shows Democrats’ plans to secure the Senate could be thrown into jeopardy. On top of that, Economist/YouGov polling shows significant portions of swing voters are uncommitted or planning to sit out the election. The NBC News survey of 1,000 registered voters conducted Sept. 11–15 shows that, despite maintaining a lead, Democrats are leading by less than they were in polling at this point in the 2018 midterm cycle when Democrats won the U.S. House. The NBC News survey has Democrats leading Republicans by five percentage points, 50 percent to 45 percent. That 5-point lead is less than half of what Democrats led by in polling from the same period in 2018, when the party held a 12-point lead according to NBC News. On top of these warning signals, Democrats’ chances in the U.S. Senate could be in jeopardy, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll released this week. The survey, conducted among 619 voters in Maine Sept. 15–22, shows GOP Sen. Susan Collins ahead of Democrat Troy Jackson by three points, 49 percent to 46 percent.

Data released Sept. 2 from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) finds that after breaking the threshold for the most illegal alien arrests in a single month in July 2026, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) surpassed that number again in August. Arrests are continuing in September, with ICE deporting a number of criminal illegal aliens this month including convicted gang members and those convicted of, among other crimes, second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of material/device for arson, second-degree robbery, possession of a controlled substance, grand theft vehicle, obstructing or resisting a public officer, and false identification to a peace officer. According to DHS, ICE arrested 50,925 illegal aliens in August, topping the 50,208 illegal aliens arrested in July. August marks the second consecutive month with over 50,000 illegal alien arrests and points to a steep increase in the number of illegals being arrested and deported from the U.S. since February. The number of arrests of illegal aliens has ramped up rapidly since February of this year. In January, 12,330 arrests were made. In February, that number rose to 17,370, and in March, it reached 18,877. The Trump Administration crossed the 20,000 threshold for total arrests within a single month in May, arresting 22,636 illegals. It crossed the 30,000 threshold in June with 30,436 arrests. July saw over 50,000 arrests and August saw nearly 51,000.

It expands upon a 1951 agreement between the U.S. and Denmark. Affirming the agreement, to be signed at the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 22, were Prime Minister of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen in two statements issued on Sept. 18. The agreement itself makes all the sense in the world to all parties involved. Greenland is the closest country to the strategically all-important North Pole, the shortest route for Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles to reach the United States in the event of a nuclear war. Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles launched from its Arctic Sea locations pass largely over Greenland, Canada and Alaska depending on the target. Now, the U.S. missile defense system will be completely integrated into Greenland.

Interest Rate Hike Unsurprising As Sticky Inflation Remains Glued From Energy Wars In Ukraine, Russia And Iran dailytorch.com/2026/09/inter…
The Federal Reserve on Sept. 16 unsurprisingly and unanimously hiked the federal funds rate for the first time since July 2023 as disinflation from the post-Covid surge that began in 2021 was beginning to abate, a process that continued all the way to the beginning of 2026 before the war in Iran escalated. The rate moved from a range of 3.5 percent to 3.75 percent to a range of 3.75 percent to 4 percent. The move comes after what had been three consecutive rate cuts in September, October and December 2025. In its Sept. 16 statement, the central bank pointed to sticky inflation as driving the decision to move interest rates higher: “Inflation remains elevated. Today's policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee's 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability.” It’s a blunt instrument, but the supply chain disruptions first brought on by Covid, the Ukraine war and then later the Iran war have left nations with little else to do slow prices down. Milton Friedman defined inflation as too much money, chasing too few goods. In the case of the post-Covid inflation, we have had both. And when it’s more difficult to quickly increase the supply of goods and services, the only other thing to do is slow the growth of or to outright decrease the money supply, usually with utilizing interest rates. Historically, higher interest rates is what the Fed has usually done in response to inflation. Usually the rate hikes continue until disinflation occurs towards the end of the cycle often coinciding with a slowdown or recession, and then it starts cutting rates again as inflation slows down. That’s where we were at the beginning of the year, but the renewed war-related global supply disruptions are again coming to the fore, and they also don’t look they’re ending any time soon. If so, tightening money might not be a perfect system — but it’s the one we’ve got.
