China is not just exporting more of everything. China’s share of global exports has been declining in categories such as finished clothing, shoes, and bags.
There is talk of a "China Squeeze" i.e. the argument that China, unlike others before, does not "shed" lower value products while moving up the value chain. This seems altogether incorrect. The chart below shows that there are plenty of less complex goods in which China's

Super interesting! "How Knowledge Crosses Borders: Evidence from Semiconductor Manufacturing" by Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg, Réka Juhász, Giulia Lo Forte, and Jeff Thurk. "We show that cross-border learning is an important feature of modern semiconductor manufacturing and that several important channels - such as knowledge sharing along global supply chains, the movement of engineers within multinational firms, and foreign direct investment - operate through market mechanisms rather than anonymous technological spillovers. These findings have significant policy implications. When cross-border learning is mediated by purposeful economic relationships, access to frontier knowledge is neither automatic nor guaranteed. Firms and governments can facilitate - or restrict - the international diffusion of technology, implying that policies to foster domestic technological upgrading are likely to be most effective when coupled with continued access to global sources of frontier knowledge." bpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/campus…

Europe's productivity gap with the United States predates AI, but AI may be widening it. Fragmented regulations and 27 national markets make it harder for European firms to achieve the scale needed to develop and deploy AI quickly, says @ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane. Why is Europe lagging the United States on AI? @ECB Executive Board member Philip Lane joins Hoover Senior Fellow Steven J. A fantastic post reviewing the evidence of the lack of an AI job apocalypse against all labs predictions, and the possible reasons for it. Highly recommended.
Has AI hit the labor market yet? @alexolegimas and my verdict after ~20 papers: not yet in aggregate. Unemployment and layoffs show almost nothing. But AI may already be cutting junior hiring in exposed white-collar jobs. Remote work may explain part of that decline. A 🧵

Tracking #poverty from space (with some fixes for messy input data) from @energyforgrowth Stephen J Lee - “For the first time, we can track poverty, energy access, income, and economic growth at the level of individual buildings, across entire continents, and update those estimates continuously. The result is not just better individual projects, but a fundamentally more productive way of allocating the immense resources the world directs at poverty alleviation. These tools stand to reshape how #aid is spent, making every dollar smarter”. thehubstack.substack.com/p/t…
