After the trade, #Leafs are projected $3.94M over cap. They can submit their roster with Merzlikins on regular LTIR & capture LTIR within $37K of optimal. That’s a pretty big get by Chayka. He gets the best player in the deal. Marchenko is an upgrade over Knies; just hope he’s worth the extra $5M AAV.

$12.5M for Marchenko is fine. The final trade, according to @FriedgeHNIC: Columbus: Knies, Lorentz, Andrae and a 2nd Toronto: Marchenko, Wood and Merzlikins (retained salary) Big trade for the Leafs. Maybe a bit of an overpayment, but Marchenko is the best player in the deal.

If Marchenko wants anything north of $12M AAV, I’m not sure this is a wise deal for the Leafs. Marchenko is the better player, but is he really worth $5M+ more per year than Knies?

Chayka has done an okay job this summer. I like a lot of what he’s done, but I can’t help but feel that trading Woll and signing Bob was completely unnecessary and perhaps even a downgrade in net. Hope I’m wrong. I give him a C+ for his offseason. Still, a big upgrade over Tre.

My first impressions after Saturday’s split-squad preseason games: McKenna needs to play with Matthews, Matthews is faster, Tavares is slower, Bob still has it, Blankenburg is better than Stecher and Andrae right now, Brisson could be the first call-up… cont.

-I see why the Leafs signed Sissons. -Paul and Cowan look pretty rusty. -Tanev looks great considering he missed most of last season. -Akhtyamov is an NHL goaltender right now. -Rybinski could play some NHL games this season. -Roslovic is not a top-six forward.

The Leafs have dominated the second period against mostly NHLers in Montreal. Rybinski has had a great period, and the few veterans dressed seem more engaged this period.

Easton Cowan hasn’t been overly noticeable at all so far, which is kind of disappointing.

Watching Game 2 since I don’t have access to the game in Toronto. So far, Brisson, Akhtyamov, and Sissons have stood out the most. Blankenburg has been the most noticeable on defence.
