USA TODAY is cutting resources and people from newsrooms like @detroitnews while expecting more without raising wages. They are still refusing to agree to a fair contract. We’re back at the bargaining table today and it’s time for @USATODAY to show it values its journalists.

USA Today has yet to recognize The Detroit News Guild with a contract since acquiring us in late January. The latest round of layoffs is a reminder that we, the workers, shouldn’t shoulder all the burden when USA Today has a bad quarter. @USATODAY @detroitnews @DetNewsGuild

I don’t know you personally, but as someone who worked for McClatchy at the News and Observer in Raleigh, I don’t think people realize how bad this is. What’s happened to local news is devastating. When local coverage is gutted, you’re losing people who intimately know your community. The local perspective is lost and the narrative of the community becomes shaped by outsiders who don’t understand the people there or completely ignored altogether.

Just to be clear: The auditor general report itself says the number used in the headline shouldn't be interpreted this way.

Considering this is how the state gets companies that build data centers to not raise electricity costs on residents, this is a huge deal.

I’m already seeing some “now the Oakland County commissioners have no excuse” sentiment following this ruling. Getting ICE barred from OC property is one of the demands from activists in the county.
