We hosted His Excellency @GitanasNauseda, President of the Republic of Lithuania, for a conversation with students and the Miami community on democracy, freedom and competitiveness in today’s global order. During his visit, President Nausėda spent time with our Student Government Association and Model United Nations leaders, discussing leadership, civic participation and global affairs. MDC international relations student and World Affairs Council of Miami intern Nicolás Bin Filet introduced President Nausėda and helped open the program. We’ve been celebrating I AM MDC Day all month long, raising funds to support student scholarships across the College. Today, we wrapped up our campus celebrations at Kendall Campus alongside students, faculty, staff, alumni and our @MDCPS partners. The South Miami Senior High Alumni Association also announced a $25,000 gift to establish the Kevin M. Cabrera Endowed Scholarship Fund for graduates attending MDC. MDC has climbed to No. 3 among Top Public Schools in the South in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, up from No. 5 last year. The College also ranks No. 3 among Best Colleges for Veterans, reflecting MDC’s longstanding commitment to veterans and its distinction as the institution serving the largest number of veterans among those ranked in the category.   These recognitions reflect the work happening across MDC every day to deliver academic excellence at scale, expand access and prepare students for opportunity, whether they are entering the workforce, continuing their education or building the next chapter of their careers.   They belong to our students, who show up every day with ambition; to our faculty and staff, who open doors; and to a Miami community that has believed in MDC for generations. The 10th annual Pink Walk brought together our Miami community at our Kendall Campus to raise awareness about early detection and preventive care for breast cancer and heart disease. Organized by the Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative, the Pink Walk grew from the work of Miami-based community health advocate and long-time MDC partner Andrea Ivory, a breast cancer survivor and CNN Hero who turned her own experience into a mission to expand access to screenings and preventive care. MDC is proud to continue hosting the Pink Walk and helping ensure our students, employees and neighbors understand the importance of prevention and early detection.

At MDC, students can begin engaging in research from their very first semester, working alongside faculty mentors at the College and researchers at R1 institutions across South Florida. Each year, our STEM Interdisciplinary Research Symposium gives them the opportunity to share that work with fellow students, faculty and the broader community. This year’s presentations reflected just how interdisciplinary that work can be, with research exploring soil health, Android mobile applications, enhancements to biotechnology and medical devices, folk culture, and much more. These experiences give students the opportunity to ask meaningful questions, test ideas and contribute to research across science, technology, the humanities and beyond. Thank you to the faculty mentors who work closely with our students throughout the year to guide this work.

Civic engagement was front and center across Miami Dade College this week, with students taking part in activities designed to strengthen their understanding of democracy and their role in it. We marked National Voter Registration Day and Constitution Day across our campuses, creating opportunities for students to register to vote and engage in conversations about how our Constitution is a living framework we put into practice every day through civic participation. As Democracy’s College, MDC is committed to giving students the knowledge, tools and opportunities to participate fully in civic life.

We hosted the @eMergeAmericas Empower Pitch Night at MDC’s The Idea Center, bringing together founders, investors, executives and community leaders from across South Florida’s startup ecosystem. The event gave 12 emerging startups the opportunity to pitch their ventures live, compete for micro-grants and connect with leaders who can help accelerate their growth. Through The Idea Center, MDC brings Miami’s entrepreneurial community together, creating opportunities for founders and helping strengthen the innovation ecosystem across South Florida.

We took the I AM MDC Day spirit through the heart of Doral with a parade from Doral Central Park to our West Campus. Our students, faculty and staff kicked off the parade with Doral Mayor @ChristiFraga and Councilman @Rafaelpineyro, both proud MDC alumni, as well as officers from the @DoralPolice Department.  On campus, we continued the I AM MDC Day celebration and announced a $15,000 investment from the @VaccUSA Foundation to support student scholarships at MDC. Thank you to our West Campus and Doral community for celebrating with us and for continuing to be such an important part of the MDC family. 💙

At today’s Board of Trustees meeting, we announced a $2.5M investment from the Florida Legislature to support MDC’s Institute for Freedom in the Americas (@IFAmericas) and its work preparing future leaders to strengthen democracy and economic competitiveness across the region. Thank you to Sen. @IleanaGarciaUSA, Rep. @DavidBorreroFL, and the @DadeDelegation for helping to ensure we continue advancing the Institute’s work with these funds.

Today, the MDC community gathered at North Campus for a memorial service marking 25 years since September 11, 2001, and remembering the 2,977 lives lost on a day that forever changed our nation. For many in our community, September 11 is a lived memory. For many of our students, it is history. As an educational institution, MDC has a responsibility to ensure future generations understand what happened that day, the lives and sacrifices behind it, and the courage, service and unity our nation witnessed in its aftermath. Remembering is part of how we preserve history and carry its lessons forward. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

We continued our I AM MDC Day celebrations at Homestead Campus with the opening of our newly renovated Student Life Center! 💙 This new space gives students more opportunities to build community and make our campus feel like home. It is part of our continued investment in our students and the future of South Dade.

We have signed a new MOU with the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano (@icpnaoficial), one of Peru’s leading institutions for English-language education, to bring AI training directly to thousands of students and professionals. Through the partnership, MDC will provide in-person and virtual courses that help ICPNA students understand AI, build practical skills using emerging tools and prepare to apply those skills in workplaces across Peru’s public and private sectors. With support from the @USEMBASSYPERU, scholarships will help expand access to these programs and make the training available to even more students. @mdcpresident Madeline Pumariega joined @rafaydb, Director of ICPNA, and U.S. Ambassador to Peru @USAmbPeru @BernieNavarro7 in Lima to sign the agreement during the AI Summit: Shaping Digital Future, which brought together education, government and private-sector leaders from across the U.S. and Peru.

There is no better way to celebrate MDC’s birthday than a day at the ballpark with the @Marlins in the heart of the 305! ⚾️🎉 It was so special to see our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends come together at loanDepot park for I AM MDC Day, celebrating a College that has brought generations of Miamians together and opened doors across our community for 66 years. Happy Birthday, MDC! 66 years ago, Miami looked very different. Miami Dade College did too. Much has changed over the decades. Our city has grown. Education has evolved. New technologies have transformed how we teach and learn. Through it all, MDC has remained a steady part of this community. Together with the Florida Civil Rights Museum, we unveiled a historic marker honoring the life and legacy of Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek at MDC’s Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center in Liberty City. Congresswoman Meek joined MDC in 1961 as our first Black professor and later served as a longtime administrator. She went on to serve in the Florida Legislature and U.S. Congress, and as a state senator secured $2.3 million to build the Liberty City Entrepreneurial Education Center that now bears her name. We also celebrated a new $500,000 investment from Congresswoman Frederica Wilson to expand entrepreneurship education and emerging technology career pathways at the Meek Center. On the eve of MDC’s 66th birthday, this moment reminds us of the people who helped build our College and open doors for generations to come. Now, future students who walk these halls will continue to learn about Carrie P. Meek’s story and the lasting impact of her legacy.

Victoria Cuellar, a recent MDC graduate and now a student at Yale University, has been named a 2026-27 Newman Civic Fellow for her commitment to making an impact in her community. At MDC, she helped launch two Little Free Libraries with 800+ book exchanges, created a media project engaging 40+ student journalists and contributed 660+ hours of service.
