The Polavaram Project, being built by MEIL Group, is designed to handle large volumes of Godavari water while also supporting the water needs of people and farmers across Andhra Pradesh. During this monsoon, the project has handled two major flood flows — around 14.8 lakh cusecs in August and another 9.7 lakh cusecs in September. Together, these two flood events involved nearly 24.5 lakh cusecs of water passing through the project. The 1.18-kilometre spillway and 48 radial gates help pass these high flows safely downstream while the project continues to perform its larger water-management role. Polavaram is not only about handling floods. The project is also designed to support irrigation for around 2.91 lakh hectares of agricultural land and provide drinking water to more than 28 lakh people. A major connectivity corridor is taking shape across the challenging terrain of Madhya Pradesh. MEIL Group is executing the 33 KM Tejaji Nagar–Balwara Road, including three tunnels of 300 M at Simrol, 480 M at Baigram and 550 M at Choral Ghat, excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Construction is progressing on the 480 m viaduct and bridges. Seasonal pumping has officially begun! Pumping operations are live at the Annapurna and Ranganayaka Sagar pump houses, which MEIL Group executed, to lift Godavari water received by gravity through Mid Manair as part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana. At the Annapurna Pump House, two of the four machines were switched on today. Downstream at Ranganayaka Sagar one 134-MW machine is running and a second is preparing to start. Farmlands across the Shajapur and Rajgarh districts in Madhya Pradesh will get a dependable source of water through the Kalisindh Phase-II Lift Irrigation Project.
