Notions of evil and shame are socially necessary. In their absence we have to consider extreme measures to prevent antisocial behavior like this.

Serco is operating a nuclear missile detection radar at RAF Fylingdales. Genuine question: at what point did we decide that tracking incoming nuclear warheads was a job for an outsourcing company? This is a facility within the US Missile Defence network. It detects ballistic missile launches. It provides early warning of nuclear attack. It operates 24/7/365. It is one of the most sensitive military installations on British soil. And it's run by the company that couldn't staff the Olympics and charged the taxpayer for tagging dead people. What happens when the contract expires in five years? Serco renegotiates. From a position of strength. Because by then THEY have the institutional knowledge. THEY have the trained staff. THEY understand the system. The MoD has nobody who can replace them because the capability was outsourced five years ago. That's the outsourcing trap. Year one: competitive tender. Year five: sole supplier. Year ten: permanent dependency. The contractor becomes irreplaceable because the client gave away the capability to replace them. Missile defence should be: Operated by RAF personnel. Trained in-house. Knowledge retained in the military. No contractor dependency. No five-year renegotiation cycle. No profit margin on nuclear early warning. If the radar fails at 3am who's accountable? An RAF commanding officer in the chain of command? Or a Serco shift manager reporting to a regional director reporting to a board in London reporting to shareholders? When the thing that detects nuclear missiles is run by a company whose primary obligation is shareholder returns, the priorities are no longer aligned with national security. They're aligned with the contract. builduk.club defence charter. Sovereign capability. In-house operation. No outsourcing of existential infrastructure.

Privatized water, sewage and mail delivery not enough? Privatize air defense! The UK is so bizarre. Deeply socialist AND deeply corporatist, in exactly the wrong places. Air defense radars should be run by soldiers and airmen. Housing should be private. Insane.
Round-the-clock vigilance, 365 days a year. @SercoGroup will operate and maintain the Solid State Phased Array Radar at RAF Fylingdales under a new five-year contract we've awarded. Designed to track missiles, acting as a deterrent within the US Missile Defence network. 🚨

This is true.
We're at a very weird time where the effort to build software is approaching zero, but the effort to find true product market fit hasn't moved much at all.

What a gift.
I met the love of my life in the San Francisco Corgi Cafe. Additionally, I’m leaving OpenAI to join Anthropic! Reverse that. I’m leaving Anthropic to join OpenAI! Got rejected by YC. Just got accepted to YC. Taste is the moat. I’m working on RL environments. Actually I’m working on data. No, scratch that, I’m working on personalizable AI for science and enterprise. Taste is the moat. I spent 10 million dollars on Claude tokens last month. I built nothing. There’s nothing to build oh my God what do I build where’s my taste taste isn’t the moat wait taste is the moat taste is the moat taste is the moat taste

The much-awaited Kickstarter project for an Apple-style split keyboard just decided they wouldn't ship the product to the EU, since the "right to repair" regulation would have made it 22% thicker. Perfect illustration of 1/ why you don't let bureaucrats (much less European ones) design by regulation 2/ the European woe of overregulating while having a decreasingly relevant market internationally. Companies can just pick option B: "I guess we just won't sell to Europe, then."

Why are TVs getting cheaper, but energy is getting more expensive? Here's a hint: the government might just have something to do with it.

Build HS3.
Both HS2 and Hinkley Point C have now hit peak construction phase. That means the workforce for each project will be declining in the coming years and months. These are the only two megaprojects being built in Britain at the moment. Thousands of apprentices were trained for each job. HS2 specifically had a tough time finding the skilled workers able to construct a high speed railway, and trained many itself. Now that we have passed peak construction, there is no other project for many of these workers to go to. Some will go overseas, others will retrain in other specialisms, still more may end up out of work entirely. This is the issue with our feast and famine approach to infrastructure. Without a steady conveyer belt of projects we have to train up new workforces from scratch when we decide to build something new. Other countries have workforces that can move seamlessly from project to project, developing new skills and keeping costs low. Starting from scratch every time is one of the many reasons why British megaprojects are so much more expensive than everyone else's.

Your interest rate literally doubles if you earn an extra penny. This is an obviously very, very dumb policy.
Lots commenting on this saying 'a pay rise is a pay rise' even if higher tax bracket True - exception of dumb £100k cliff with childcare benefit etc. But they're unaware of this UTTERLY INSANE POLICY whereby we charge HIGHER INTEREST if you earn more IT'S MENTAL

You should watch Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. It's an important piece of art. The kind that makes you think about your present and our collective future. Thought provoking and valuable. Turns out not everything is fake right now. Some things are worth watching. GL, HF, DD.

This isn’t how people work in the real world. I do not have a single client that would think earning another £10,000 to keep only £2,600 of it would be worth their time.

I am not defending the student loan system. I am saying you're still always better off earning more. In my case, of every extra £ I earn I pay 40p tax, 2p Nation Insurance, 13p pension, 2p levy to Labour, 9p student loan, 8p tithe - but that still leaves me 26p better off!
Community note
Marginal interest rates on UK incomes exceed 100% in many cases, for example, for earners crossing £100k income and having childcare subsidy for 2 small children. This means it is not always better to earn more. taxpolicy.org.uk/wp-content/ass…

I applaud @SamJRushworth for engaging with folks on twitter. I hope that people are able to convince him that the more the government takes of an incremental pound the less willing someone is to work to generate it. At some point, they just... don't bother.
This is really silly- it's 9% not 100% of your pay rise. Always worth earning more.

Stock transfer taxes are just as stupid as real estate transfer taxes. Tailor made to stop economic growth.
The CEO of a London-listed bank who earlier served as the Treasury’s director of investment in 2024 has denounced stamp duty on shares as a significant barrier to growth. “The biggest handbrake on this business is people having to pay tax when they’re buying a share,” said Ian Corfield, the CEO of Secure Trust Bank But spineless politicians have consistently refused to scrap this absurd tax which is destroying British capital markets.

you used to write code by hand and when it didn’t work you had to go into the codebase and understand all the functions sometimes people would go on for days about variable names and we would argue about what programming language was better
