“To the prostitutes,’ a drunken voice gave a toast. ‘May their hoohas forever be welcoming and may they never grow teeth like my wife’s.'” @NjorogeWambugu_mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"There was talk about how the corpse, back when it was a man named Steve, wasn’t particularly full of life. How he didn’t particularly light up a room when he entered it. In fact, no one ever noticed when he was in the room." - Joseph Linscott mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"Everyone recording the man floating in the water. When this was over, they’d be forced to see their filming only created the most bizarre public porno anyone had ever seen: Homeless Bull Finishes Himself in Front of Thirsty Crowd at Local Park." DJ Garcia mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"You could willfully misread the assignment & become a butter man: sit patiently & hold your head still while your sculpted likeness is brought to pale unpasteurized life at the Minnesota State Fair. But... is that who you really want to be?" - Matt Leibel mrbullbull.com/newbull/micro…
"At the sink, Devin shoveled week-old pink unicorn cake into his mouth with a toddler’s spoon. Treacly sweet, it nuked his taste buds, leaving a pudding-like mouthfeel. It was terrible. He took another bite." - Kyle Joseph Kennedy mrbullbull.com/newbull/flash…
"No one at the garage cares who he is. He’s simply Oskar, who does oil changes, checks spark plugs, changes bulbs and belts, all the jobs the real mechanics don’t want to bother with. They don’t know, or care to know, where Slovenia is." - Margaret Cahill mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"Her hands on her hips and thrust forward like that. Of course I loved her. And I didn't too. Maybe it was envy. It was hard to tell the difference that night." - Eric Potter mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"White water fell through the gap. Chunks of the dam swirled in dirty foam and whirled downriver. Before long the water above and below the dam was calm and level. After a while it was like there had never been anything there at all." @thmsbrnsmrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
MY GOODREADS REVIEW of @thedrevlow "The Captain's Been Drinking" (@CowboyJamboree )
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Captain's Been Drinking
by Benjamin Drevlow
"If you, like me, are a fan of Drevlow's voicey, gritty work, well...he's done it again. "The Captain's Been Drinking" is simultaneously disturbing and funny. As with all of Drevlow's writing, I found myself thinking how uniquely gifted this author is in creating a narrator whose voice is so authentic you feel like they're telling the story to you personally. It's more like an experience than reading.
One review I read said of the characters Davey Boy and Eddie that they're like friends we've all had at some point in our lives. I beg to differ. I hated these guys, and I wouldn't stand behind them in line at a concert much less be friends with them. But unlikeable characters are often the most intriguing and memorable. Drevlow is a master at dialogue--often it's what his characters hold back, what they never say between the lines that is incredibly thought provoking.
This book was a constant surprise with the awkward comedic coming-of-age friendship/love story and murder mystery braided together in a way only Drevlow could write. This is for grit lit fans with a dark sense of humor."

Issue #14 of my column MOANS FROM THE CONDIMENT FRIDGE in @MISTERBULLBULL dropped today, titled DOUBLE FEATURE.
This issue is about the drive-in I went to with my father, why decades later I didn't attend his funeral. It's old movies and complicated relationships

"I chose to remember my father for who he truly was: a thief; a grifter; a veteran of the Vietnam War, but also, a lover of books; music; and movies." @frank21274mrbullbull.com/newbull/moans…
"It’s so cute when she tries to saw me in half. The way her arms wobble holding that vigorous blade longer than her body, her glee at that first cut, how she laughs at my screams when she finally hits bone." @benjaminstarrmrbullbull.com/newbull/micro…

"I grab the ice bucket from the dresser, but there’s a thumb in there, so I don’t want to use it. I check my hands to see if it’s my thumb, but it isn’t." @MatthewTMeademrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
"Shimmy was going to do psychedelics in Australia, he’d said, lying down for his own funeral. Then the tunnel-monkeys had burst up from down under and all the red in his eyes had sprayed out from his neck-tunnel. 'Whoa!" - Adi Dvir mrbullbull.com/newbull/ficti…
