New paper in PLOS ONE 🔥🛁
20 men did 60-min hot-water immersion (39°C). What they'd actually choose:
→ Stop at ~31 min, not 60
→ Weekly use: ~49 min. Only 15% pick it over walking
→ Time = the #1 barrier
Heat therapy works, but protocols run longer than people will do.
1/ Today the @PhySoc launches its report in Parliament on extreme heat & occupational health. Core argument: air temp limits alone won't protect workers - thresholds need to be physiologically informed.
That's the exact gap my own work (under review) digs into.
2/ I reviewed the evidence behind NIOSH's heat work-rest limits (REL/RAL) using strict criteria:only studies with directly measured WBGT + metabolic heat production, not estimates.
Of 1,403 records, only 5 studies met the bar.
→ 0 unacclimated trials conformed to the Alert Limit
3/
→ Among acclimated trials, 88% exceeding the Exposure Limit hit core temps >38°C - but so did 33% that stayed within it.
→ Older adults, women, and multi-day exposure remain understudied.
Every trial found sits above the RAL threshold - it's never been tested below it.
How will USA temperatures affect England's performance? Could teams from hotter climates have an advantage?🌡️🥵⚽️

I'm proud to share that I have been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Environmental Physiology and Ergonomics!
Thank you to those who have shared their wisdom and experience along the way - I'm grateful, and I will pay it forward to those coming through.
Nice to have the second study of my PhD finished up! ♨️

People respond to cold exposure very differently ❄️
I spoke with BBC Crowd Science about non-freezing cold injury (NFCI), cold adaptation, and why not everyone reacts the same way - it’s more than mindset.
NFCI can occur without freezing, has long-term consequences, and risks are influenced by physiology, environment, prior exposure, equipment, and context - not race as a simple biological category.
Winter myth-busting time ❄️
🍷 Alcohol = heat? Briefly. Then you get colder.
🧦 Extra socks? Only if your feet can breathe.
🧥 Too many layers too fast = sweat = cold.
