DAY 23 OF 30: SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS If you play high-school baseball in Northern California and you’re scanning Division I mid-majors that actually develop big-league talent without asking you to disappear across the country, Sacramento State belongs on the short list. The Hornets call John Smith Field home — a 1,200-seat on-campus ballpark in Sacramento where home plate hasn’t moved since the park opened in 1953. Lights arrived in 2016. It’s not a Power conference palace; it’s a working college baseball environment in the capital city, minutes from the freeways that feed Roseville, Folsom, Rocklin, Concord, and the rest of the Sacramento–Bay Area talent corridor. Head coach Reggie Christiansen enters the Big West era as one of California’s most durable DI builders. Named head coach for 2011, he completed his 16th season at the helm in 2026. Under him the program has claimed three WAC regular-season titles (2012, 2014, 2025), three WAC tournament titles (2014, 2017, 2019), and three NCAA Regional appearances. Official athletics materials credit him with mentoring multiple All-Americans and Freshman All-Americans, and with 28 MLB Draft selections (plus free-agent signees) since he took over. Five former Hornets have reached the majors under his watch: Rhys Hoskins, Sam Long, James Outman, Nathan Lukes, and Travis Adams (Adams debuted with Minnesota in July 2025). Three Hornets were drafted that July: Carson Latimer (12th round, Cincinnati), JP Smith (17th, Minnesota), and Kade Brown (20th, Athletics). Brown earned NCBWA third-team All-America recognition as a closer. 2026 was the program’s final WAC season before the Big West move. The Hornets finished 29–32 overall and 10–8 in conference (tied for third), then made their first WAC Tournament title-game appearance since 2019. Along the way they punched above the bracket: they took two of three at then-No. 2 LSU in March, and on April 26 they beat No. 1 UCLA 9–6 at Jackie Robinson Stadium — the program’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team. They also notched the program’s 1,000th Division I victory (vs. UT Arlington, April 17). Look at the 2026 roster and the NorCal story writes itself. Locals and near-locals dotted the lineup — Rio Americano, Folsom, Granite Bay, McClatchy, Bella Vista, Oakmont, Clayton Valley, De La Salle, Berkeley, Colusa, Woodland, Stockton, and more — alongside JC and transfer talent. Freshman Roseville product Trevor Wilson closed the UCLA win. That geographic footprint matters for a HS player who wants DI reps without leaving the region that raised him. As of July 1, 2026, Sacramento State is a full Big West member. For baseball, that means a California-centric league schedule and a clearer recruiting map against programs HS prospects already know by name. The Hornets are not promising anyone a draft slot or a conference title. What they can show is a verified track record: sustained WAC contention, recent draft volume, active MLB alumni, and a coaching staff that has already proven it can beat the best teams in the country on the right day. 🧵👇
