At seven, a family friend finally convinced him to try Mel Leathley's kickboxing gym. Brazilian jiu-jitsu followed in his mid-teens, and the amateur résumé eventually became impressive enough to include European gold and a world bronze. Staines later relocated to Liverpool and joined Next Generation MMA, sharing the room with Paddy Pimblett and the wider Liverpool team. Outside the gym, he is an avid Lego builder, particularly when it comes to Star Wars sets. His nickname, "Star Killer," is something he carries without trying to turn it into a larger persona. His stated goal is simple: become the first fighter from Hull to reach the UFC and then see how far he can take it. Inside the cage, the personality is equally straightforward. Add a master's degree from the University of Arizona and a previous career as a financial analyst, including government work and a stint connected to JPMorgan, and Abushaar's path becomes even less conventional. His Palestinian roots eventually brought him to Hebron for three months during wartime, where he initially went to teach English before becoming involved in moving food, water, clothing and school supplies. Locals began calling him Captain. Family and friends questioned the decision to make the trip. Abushaar went anyway. His MMA development eventually took him from Fight Ready to MMA Lab under John Crouch, where he now trains alongside experienced fighters who view the sport as a long-term profession rather than simply a highlight reel. "Savage Bull" is the nickname. The more interesting story is the willingness to repeatedly choose the difficult path. 👊This is one of the more interesting prospect matchups on the card, although it is also one where the experience gap matters. Staines went 16-1 as an amateur on the IMMAF circuit before making the jump to professional MMA. Since then, he has remained perfect through Oktagon and Cage Warriors, including back-to-back wins over undefeated prospects. He is a complete lightweight. The striking is good, the wrestling is a major weapon, and his grappling is already at a level that should translate to the UFC. Quite frankly, this feels like a step down in opposition for him. That does not mean Abushaar is a tomato can. He is a massive lightweight with legitimate knockout power, and his physical tools would have made him a problem for several of the lightweights DWCS has featured this year. He simply drew the wrong opponent. His lone loss came by quick first-round knockout, while his overall schedule has not been nearly as demanding as Staines' recent run. Expect Staines to close distance, get the takedowns he wants and spend the fight forcing Abushaar to defend rather than allowing him to establish his striking.
