Earlier this shift on Sunday, the summit cleared from the fog in time to reveal a partial undercast to our west as the sun was setting and lighting up the clouds.
The summit will be dry today and fog-free as high pressure crests overhead and then shifts offshore.

September 10th was a notably windy day on the summit. The peak wind gust for the day was 104 mph, which reset the daily wind record (originally 98 mph in 1972). The daily average wind speed of 70.1 mph was our highest since January 12th, and is currently the 4th highest of 2026.

Winter is coming! Early this morning, summit temperatures dipped just below freezing while in the fog, coating our tower instruments in a thin glaze of ice, allowing us to deice for the first time in months!

Well said, Governor Ayotte. Jack meant so much to @mwobs and the entire Mount Washington community.
With Jack Middleton’s passing yesterday, New Hampshire has lost a great man and an icon in the legal field.
Jack practiced law for 70 years, was a litigation expert, President of the New Hampshire Bar Association, a New Hampshire District Court Judge, and a foundational partner at McLane Middleton, where I started my legal career.
From his time working up at the Mount Washington Observatory to traveling the globe, Jack was an adventurer. To me, he was also a role model and mentor who knew that attorneys had to give good legal advice but also had to use good judgment.
I am thankful for Jack’s impact on my career and for his decades of friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Middleton family and the McLane Middleton law firm.
