BattleMechs Through the Years #26: The CRS-6B Crossbow
While the original primitive CRS-X Crossbow debuted in 2468, it only took five years for the Lyran Commonwealth to upgrade it with advanced technology from the Terran Hegemony.
All the original primitive parts had been stripped away, with new modernized equipment in its place. The 60 ton BattleMech had great speed for an early missile boat, able to travel at up to 86.4 kilometers per hour.
Built for long range engagement, the CRS-6B came equipped with two LRM-10 launchers and a PPC. Two medium lasers also offered it some measure of protection and offense in more personal fights.
Unfortunately, House Steiner still wasn't able to perfect the design. It still suffered from flaws in its long range targeting systems, making it less efficient at the primary thing it was designed for in the first place. On top of this, it only carried ten heat sinks, meaning thermal buildup was a concern for most pilots, especially those that favored using the particle projector cannon.
Despite these deficiencies, the Lyran Commonwealth was still able to do something groundbreaking with the 6B - adding modular weapons to BattleMechs. Both missile launchers were modular, meaning they could be repaired, replaced and modified far more quickly. This would be a precursor to the Omni technology that would be developed centuries later.
Aside from the Commonwealth, the Draconis Combine and Free Worlds League also utilized the CRS-6B during the Age of War. Only House Steiner would continue to use it through the Star League era however, with the last models being destroyed during the destructive early Succession Wars.
