Here's a small story from Windsor Castle that tells you more about the Princess of Wales than any red carpet.
In June she climbed the three highest mountains in Britain in a day, on her own, for the hospital that treated her cancer. What nobody saw on the television was who else was on those hills. The Three Peaks is never empty; every weekend it's full of people walking for someone. And on her way up she kept meeting the same ones.
There was Ted Haslam, a boy in a wheelchair, being pushed and carried up the mountain by his father Pete and fifteen family and friends, one at a time, raising money for a children's charity called Molly Ollys. She met him more than once on the route. There was Sean McCormick, whom she met right at the start, part of a group walking for a friend's nephew who had just been diagnosed with cancer, the same word she'd heard about herself two years before.
She finished her climb at the foot of Yr Wyddfa with William and the children waiting. And then, months later, quietly, she invited those people to Windsor Castle for tea and cake. No press. No speech. A few chairs in a state room and a princess pouring for a boy who'd been carried up a mountain by the people who love him.
Her message with it was one line: recovery is rarely a journey we make alone.
That's the thing about her. It was never about her climb. She said at the time it was a small way to give something back, and she meant it, but the truer measure is what she did with the people she met on the way up. She noticed them. She remembered their names. She had them to her house.
A fortnight of talking about Diana, and it's worth saying plainly: this is what Diana was for. Not the dresses or the interviews. The noticing. Her daughter-in-law does it on mountains now, without a camera in sight, and then serves the tea.

The Princess of Wales highlighting Addiction Awareness week earlier today.
The Princess’ visit comes during Addiction Awareness Week (19-25 September), which this year is calling for the nation to join “The Big Addiction Conversation.”
Each year, around 17,000 people die from alcohol or drug related causes in the UK. This year’s campaign aims to highlight that while these statistics are stark, recovery is possible, help is available, & lives can be changed when people feel able to ask for support & when families, friends, colleagues & communities have the confidence to reach out with compassion & understanding.
The Big Addiction Conversation aims to spark 17,000 conversations over the next year — one for every life lost — supported by toolkits & Conversation Cards created by The Forward Trust alongside lived experience ambassadors. Starting this week & across the UK, people will be encouraged to have compassionate, honest conversations — in workplaces & in communities — about addiction, the stigma that surrounds it & its impact.
The Forward Trust hopes that these conversations will form a larger, national conversation that can challenge misconceptions, encourage compassion, & change the narrative on addiction.

Sad news from Ireland. Ancient sites-tombs,dolmen and graves (most older than the pyramids) are being wilfully destroyed by sledgehammers and picks, & the Irish Government is doing NOTHING- not even worthy of a mention. Sad days indeed.
