$NVO has entered a major global licensing and collaboration agreement with Swedish drug delivery company Nanexa worth up to €1.165B.
The agreement gives Novo exclusive global rights to use Nanexa’s PharmaShell technology for certain peptide drugs targeting obesity, type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.
The collaboration could include up to five development programs, with a particularly interesting goal: developing long-acting injectable medicines that could be administered monthly or even quarterly.
PharmaShell uses an ultra-thin coating around individual drug particles to control and extend the release of the medicine over time.
Novo will lead global development and commercialization. Nanexa is eligible for up to €1.165B, including €615M in upfront, development and regulatory payments, plus sales milestones and low single-digit royalties.
The deal adds another approach to Novo’s efforts to make cardiometabolic treatments more convenient, potentially reducing injections from weekly to monthly or quarterly.
