Somewhere in that backyard a man was tracking the fluid levels of eleven strangers and adjusting supply in real time and drinking while he did it. I asked him if he was related to the host. He said, "We work together." Then he said, "Not anymore. He quit." He does not work with the host. He came anyway. He is managing the cooler at the house of a man he no longer sees daily. I asked when the host quit. "Two years ago." Two years. He has been coming to this house and running the cooler for two years past the expiration of their professional relationship.
