This is a huge loss. As a massive fan of Star Trek The Next Generation, I grew up knowing him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was my favorite show. Patrick Stewart was an actor's actor that went way beyond Star Trek.. On a personal note: In a former life Patrick was a neighbor of mine. He lived in the house across the street from me and was the nicest most humble movie star i have ever encountered. He always made a point to say hello and ask me how the music business was. I would apologize for the loud guitar playing and we would have a laugh. Rest in peace Sir.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we werenโ€™t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. โ€œBut Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to riskโ€”getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?โ€. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in Londonโ€™s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

In the early 90s, I begged my then-agent to arrange a pitch meeting with the writers of TNG in their third season. I was a young Canadian nobody, but desperately wanted to write for Patrick Stewart's Jean Luc Picard. I developed three stories and pitched my heart out, but I couldn't close the deal. I have few regrets in this business, but not having the chance to write for such a wonderful actor and character, whose voice I can hear so clearly in my mind even now, is one of them. Rest in peace, sir.

Patrick Stewart was a wonderful actor and the best ever captain of the starship Enterprise. Star Trek imagines a future in which we strive to treat each other decently and follow our curiosity to expand the sum of human knowledge. I will miss you, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick Stewart (1940โ€“2026). A true legend of science fiction. Patrick famously teamed up with Mark Hamill for a playful Star Wars vs. Star Trek campaign and made a voice cameo as Captain Picard in Family Guyโ€™s Star Wars parody Itโ€™s a Trap!, alongside Carrie Fisher. An extraordinary actor who meant so much to generations of fans. May the Force be with you, Sir Patrick.

There are so many great scenes I could point out where Sir Patrick Stewart was playing extraordinarily, but one of my most favorite scenes is him narrating Earthโ€™s oldest known literature, the Gilgamesh Epos, in the TNG episode โ€œDarmokโ€, while the alien captain played by late Paul Winfield passed away. Shaka, when the walls fell! Rest in Power, Captain.

To celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare, Iโ€™m sharing a few lines from my most favorite sonnet, Sonnet 116. Iโ€™ve converted a few of my friends to its cause, and Iโ€™m hoping youโ€™re next. Cheers!
