Because if Mary wasn’t a virgin, then Revelation 12 was about the Zodiac Sign Virgo the Virgin, and suddenly astrology is forever anchored to Christianity.
Why is it so important to the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodoxy that Mary remain a perpetual virgin?

Paul teaches that marriage includes conjugal rights (1 Cor 7:3–5). A permanent vow of virginity after Mary and Joseph were married opposes this inspired teaching, and Scripture never even hints that they were an exception.
A person is free to believe what they want about details the Bible does not disclose. The main issue is that these churches require others to accept this extra-biblical inference for salvation.
