The Norman Conquest? It took hundreds of years for the population of the north of England to recover from the Harrying of the North. Regarding Delhi, I meant the colonialists didn’t change it. I thought Delhi’s name predated the British Empire?

I’m not against countries changing place names, although I would prefer it not to be foisted on the people by government. I just don’t think people should be browbeaten into calling a place by a different name than the one that’s been in popular use for hundreds of years.
