The root causes of many of my issues, including my #addiction, were childhood trauma. But my healing from these deep wounds did require that I realize that I had to take responsibility for my recovery. Both to heal and to learn healthier behaviors. #wedorecover #recoveryposse

This ties to my answer when asked "what's the #1 thing we could do to reduce the US's high addiction rate." I respond, "mental health treatment for kids."
Emotional Abuse, Neglect, and Parental Mental Illness Drive Adolescent Substance Use Risks. Using data from ~3,200 kids, they tracked 11 experiences (ages 3–9) like abuse, neglect, food insecurity, parent mental illness/substance use, violence, or incarceration, and checked links to cigarette, marijuana, or heavy alcohol use at age 15. Cannabis use was tied to neglect and a parent’s mental illness. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4224…

This recommendation from the Library Journal, which reviews books for US libraries, was a proud moment. I especially loved the "page-turning prose" part, because I worked hard to learn how to write my story well. #memoir #books #addiction amazon.com/dp/0757324568

Youth #cannabis use has declined since 1999, although adult cannabis use has increased recently. For cannabis, as all drugs, later initiation is less risky as far as odds of developing an addiction and other factors. recoveryanswers.org/research…

This study emphasizes that decriminalizing drug use has positive benefits but, by itself, cannot resolve #overdose deaths or the toxicity of the drug supply. And that when interpreting the data you have to compare it to places that didn't decriminalize or recriminalize. cmaj.ca/content/cmaj/198/31/…

This is a model that I'd love to see more broadly: "Most importantly, medical care, case management, residential services, and recovery services are integrated under one roof—a model not often seen elsewhere." #addiction #homeless #sobriety ppponline.org/blog/philly-ho…

I went to Berkeley #Law at 6 years sober and landed a top tier job. So accomplished a dream I'd lost due to my #addiction. But the workload consumed most of my life. I realized I had other priorities and left for a job with better work/life balance. #soberlife

For the first few years of my recovery, I had to force myself to pause, look back, and see my progress. Because my natural inclination was to focus on the negative. This strategy helped build my confidence, that I could handle life and guide myself forward.

When I got #sober, I started to have more fun. For example, if you had a birthday party, I'd actually show up, with a gift, and behave appropriately! Rarely could I do all 3 of these when I was using. #soberlife #recoveyrposse

At 32, year 20 of my drug use, the fun was a distant memory. I also wasn't successful in #trauma therapy until I got sober, because I couldn't connect to my emotions or see my history accurately. #addiction #recoverposse

This is a useful chart. In addition, abusers often progress from these behaviors to physical abuse.
Abuse isn’t always physical. 💜 It can look like humiliation, constant criticism, ignored boundaries, dismissed feelings, blame, and control. Recognizing these behaviours is an important step toward healthier relationships. #EmotionalAbuse #HealthyRelationships

A small study, but consistent with other research, "suggests that this cherished [rock bottom] narrative is not only inaccurate for most people — it may actively harm them by delaying treatment and deepening stigma. . . . The researchers suggest that the promotion of human flourishing may therefore lead to sustained recovery — a reframing that shifts the clinical question from “how bad must it get?” to “what does this person need to build a life worth staying sober for?” bioengineer.org/rock-bottom-…
