Tips for preparing ahead of the storm: • Monitor conditions closely and ensure that Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are enabled on your cell phone. If your community has a reverse 911 system, you should sign up to receive local warnings. ✔️ • Make sure your home emergency kit is stocked with supplies that could help in the event of a power outage, including a flashlight and extra batteries. ✔️ Additional tips on what to do in the event of a flood or power outage can be found at mass.gov/MEMA

A crucial component of emergency management is hazard mitigation, which focuses on reducing or eliminating long-term risks to people and property caused by natural hazards. 🚨 One recent example of a successful hazard mitigation project managed by MEMA's Mitigation Unit is an infrastructure project that upgraded an undersized culvert (in the bottom left photo) in Bolton on Forbush Mill Road. Historically, this critical roadway had experienced recurring flooding during heavy storm events, creating challenges for residents and emergency services accessing the Bolton Department of Public Works, the Bolton Transfer Station, and Route 117. 🛻 Ensuring the long-term resilience of the road was a priority for the community. Using funds from FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, Bolton constructed an expanded culvert (in the bottom right photo). This upgrade significantly improves stormwater capacity, mitigates future flood risks, and secures uninterrupted access along this essential route. ✔️ MEMA is proud to play a role in helping communities across the state improve resilience to natural disasters, and we're grateful to all our partners on this project (top photo)! #MitigationMonday See less

Today, MEMA is celebrating the retirement of Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Michael Josti and recognizing an incredible career of service to the Commonwealth. As a member of the Massachusetts State Police liaison team permanently embedded at MEMA, Sgt. Josti has been a trusted partner and an integral part of emergency management at the state level. Over the years, he has played a key role in the planning, response, and recovery efforts surrounding countless incidents and events across Massachusetts. From significant snowstorms and the COVID-19 pandemic to major planned events including the Boston Marathon and, most recently, the FIFA World Cup, Sgt. Josti has brought his experience, professionalism, and commitment to collaboration to some of the Commonwealth’s most complex operations. The relationships built between our agencies and the expertise of liaisons like Sgt. Josti are critical to ensuring Massachusetts is prepared to respond when it matters most. Thank you, Sgt. Josti, for your years of service, your partnership, and your dedication to the Commonwealth. Congratulations on your retirement, and best wishes for this next chapter!
