The only people who say the fiscal adjustment Brazil needs (2-3% of GDP) will be a "walk in the park" are those who have absolutely no clue of what they are talking about For starters, any measure sent to Congress is guaranteed to be significantly diluted (look at the Social Secutiry Reform in 2019), so an intended effective 2% of GDP in savings would need to be presented as a project aiming for about 4% of GDP (or about R$ 500bn/y) And imagining you can achieve those kind of savings just by "fighting corruption", "restructuring social benefits" or "eliminating certain fiscal incentives" - all subject to approval by a hostile Congress - is delusional to a point where it can only be seen as a joke Totaly clueless...

BREAKING: Brazil's -19.8% stock market crash on Monday was one of the rarest market events in the last two decades, according to our analysis. Brazil's EWZ ETF plunged -19.8% on October 26th, marking an 8.4 standard deviation move. For context, the ETF's average daily move over the last 20 years has been just +0.04%, with a standard deviation of 2.36%. Under a normal distribution, the probability of a decline this extreme is approximately 1 in 58 quadrillion. In other words, this event should be virtually impossible under conventional statistical models. What just happened in Brazil was *almost* impossible.

Economicamente, socialmente e ideologicamente o Lula é um merda. Responsavel por 20 anos de atraso do Brasil. Mas porra, muita aura ai. Se o Bolsonaro fosse metade disso ele nunca sairia do poder. “Quer ser meu vice?” Kkkkk Frouxo do caralho.

Good point. The real bear case is that the only way to get politicians in Brazil (or anywhere else!) to take fiscal constraints seriously is to have a full-blown crisis. Which means that investors will have to lose money first, then recover it. If things stay calm and orderly, there won't be action. Question then becomes, is what we're seeing right now enough chaos to force action? Probably not. Probably need another Dec 2024, if not worse. Feeling for you guys down there. Brazil is an amazing country and has excellent economic thinkers, some of the best in the world. But the beloved Lula handouts that grow faster than inflation are just too juicy for economically-illiterate voters to say no to (unless they have hyperinflation knocking on their door, as in Argentina).
