Associate Professor of Political Science, Saint Louis University. I share research on conflict, policing, and security, plus the occasional dog photo.

Want to know how entho-religious diversity in the police affects crime and security in the Middle East? You can find out by ordering my book! Use the code "NANES21" by the end of October for a discount. cambridge.org/9781108839051
1/4 Just got the cover design for my book, due later this year with @CambridgeUP! It's exciting to see 8 years of work come to fruition! In Policing for Peace, I ask how the inclusion of previously-marginalized groups in the police affects politics.

There's lots of talk about how better bollards in New Orleans could have stopped the terror attack. But as Trevor Bachus and I write, physical barriers alone just shift the nature of political violence; they can't fully prevent it. doi.org/10.1177/002200272199… (DM for ungated link)

Hey #AcademicTwitter (or what's left of it): Does anyone's campus internet block Dropbox? Our IT dept has decided to do this for "security," and we're trying to get a sense for how unusual this is.

Even at places where teaching is supposed to be a big component, the near impossibility of evaluating teaching quality out in the wild means that aside from the <5% who win awards or completely fail to show up, everyone's teaching gets evaluated about the same.

I see we're doing "my stats software is better than your stats software" again, on the basis that a human person used the software incorrectly. 🙄

I'm really concerned that my assignments are making students sick. The rate of illness on days that a student is scheduled to give a presentation is so much higher than on other days!

Attending a faculty council meeting as both the political science rep (my usual gig) and a proxy for my colleague, the social science rep. I'll be voting with both hands.

Hey @WholeFoods I found some friends in my arugula! The big orange guy has some tiny buddies, if you look closely. So much for "triple washed!" (Lot number in photo)

Super interesting new research on policing with evidence from Pakistan.
Paper now out at @cps_journal with @NicJLyon on whether sharing ethnicity with a police officer affects expectations of bias or favoritism. In particular, we focus on citizen perceptions of procedural justice in quotidian interactions with the police. 1/ journals.sagepub.com/doi/epu…

p-hacking is bad, but file-drawering every study whose results which miss an arbitrary "significance" threshold is also bad.
I'm tired of checking every finding I want to cite for p-hacking. If your p-values are all around 0.05, if you haven't pregistered, if your sample sizes are too small, and especially if you are reporting interactions under these conditions, please, please don't publish.

Today I solved a printing issue that IT had been unable to fix for months, and successfully completed a flight cancellation and rebooking in Concur that our travel admin told me was impossible. I'd feel super accomplished if I had somehow also managed to do my actual work.

Giving a lecture on US foreign policy in MENA next week, and naturally I finished prepping my materials 12 hours before the US started blowing things up in Yemen. Gonna go rewrite that lecture now...

1/4 How do members of a majority group respond to inclusion of minorities in the police? In a new article @JPR_journal, I find no evidence that Israeli Jews respond negatively to Arab police. In fact, exposure to Arab police is associated with increased trust in Arabs.

3/4 increased inclusion of Arab citizens of Israel in the police enhances prospects for intergroup cooperation. Of note, this project was a long time in the making. Data is from 2008-2015, prior to the current conflict. Still, the results give a glimmer of hope.
