I’m going to do a 🧵 about making retro-style games in C/C++, and also about getting them to run in a browser.

It's always great when someone posts a video of playing one of my games, and even more so when they seems to be enjoying themselves :) @wahwahqueenmew posted this video on their youtube channel - check it out: youtu.be/zSsH2TYYXZU

Lately I've been developing a series of small projects in C as a hobby using the excellent dos-like framework (github.com/mattiasgustavsson…) from @Mattias_G . These are small projects coded "by hand" (without AI), purely as a hobby and for fun.

If you haven’t tried it, give my game Neon Lies a go. It’s free and plays in the browser. I’m quite proud of it, I think it’s among the better things I’ve made. If you play it, I’d love to hear what you think of it 🙂 mattiasgustavsson.itch.io/ne…

I tried my hand at making a video codec. I didn't know the first thing about video codecs when I started, so was quite fun to learn about the concepts and how to implement them. I packaged the result in a stb-style, single-file header-only lib, < 2500 loc with no dependencies.

Here's a pretty efficient quicksort implementation in macro form for C. It being a macro means the compare function can be inlined instead of being through a function pointer. Code is a horrible macro mess, but it works gist.github.com/mattiasgusta…

Is there a good online community (discord or whatever) for disussing specifically C programming (and only C programming), without being centered around a specific codebase? And to be precise, hand coded C, not AI generated or vibe coded. Got any tips for such spaces?

Another thing I do is make the blacks less solid, and overal use some masks and noise to make things less uniform and give it more texture and character. Maybe some tweaking of the relative strength of the effects is still needed.

Some of the main things I do, is add a pulp paper texture, mute and adjust the colors, and add some halftone dot patterns (trying to do it in a way to get those distinct rosette patterns that old comics have)

So my image processor takes the digital version (the clean one) and applies filters and adjustments to emulate some of the print artefacts, without going all out. I am not trying for accuracy here, I just want to capture some of the feel.

I wanted to share something I've been playing around with recently: a image processing thingy for taking "digital" comics (retouched re-releases of old comics in digital form), and make them look a bit more like old comics printed with low-quality ink on pulp paper.

I've created a repo for it on github, and I will use the "discussions" feature to talk about it: github.com/mattiasgustavsson… If you are interested in the project, or want to contribute ideas or even code, feel free to join the discussions :)
