This majestic tawny frogmouth just came and hung out on my windowsill all morning, as far as I know he’s still there

What's the most recent movie that you could hum/whistle the theme to, gun to your head? Original songs don't count. What are the John Williams style ubiquitous tunes of the last 10-20 years? I don't know that I could hum anything more recent than like Grand Budapest Hotel

Actually La La Land, could definitely hum a bit of that if you threatened to kill me

as much as i dislike the broad strokes of On the Waterfront, the details of Eve Marie Saint’s performance are illustrious. i think about the scene of her and Brando with the glove often

But also no film this decade has been as good as this (specifically Series 9)

Like I know I enjoyed the scores to things like Phantom Thread, Drive My Car etc. but I can't recall the music to actually hum off the top of my head

Pit Latrine sounds like a great b-movie actor, like that’s someone who played the antagonist in a Boetticher-Scott western, had a bit part in The Ten Commandments, made his last appearances in Italian films with long titles.

2023 - Red Album remixes Nasty extraction artifacts, the way voices are EQ’d is grating. Nice to have some songs in a 3-track format, but still disappointing. Some tracks (‘In My Life’) basically mono but with less fidelity than the OG. Start of ‘Drive My Car’ especially syrupy.

2026 - Deluxe Edition Same as 2023 but with added reverb/slightly boosted high end on some tracks. At least the loudness that’s plagued earlier Giles releases is diminished here.

TL;DR The OG stereo remains my favourite, even with the hard-panning. The mono is a good alternative for having the more direct punch, just has slightly reduced fidelity. The new mixes use lots of AI extraction, especially lazy when the original multitracks exist.

2023 - Prof. Stoned fan remix Some weird extraction techniques going on here, sounds mushier and with less separation than even the official AI demixes that follow it. Nicer EQ than the official Apple ones though. Some bits of added reverb that don’t work.

1999 - Yellow Submarine Songtrack (just Nowhere Man) This is the only remix of a RS song that sounds like they actually went back to the original multitracks, and it shows. A shame there’s NR, added reverb and the breathing edited out. They were almost on the right path here.

1987 - George Martin remix, '87 and '09 CDs Basically the same twin-track presentation of the original stereo, but with added digital reverb and some reduced separation. Doesn't sound that terrible, but not sure why George did it this way.

1965 - Mono mix Weaker fidelity than the OG stereo (the stereo being hard-panned means it actually folds down nicely to mono, and when you do this the fidelity is lower generation than the mono) The Soul Sessions bootleg, the 2014 LP and the 2026 all sound very similar

1965 - OG stereo mix Putting aside that this is nearly all ‘twin-track’ style stereo, the loveliest sounding mix: beautiful vintage 60s tonality, breathing room. The best fidelity of any mix. The hard panning doesn’t bother me tbh, to me that’s the sound of Rubber Soul.
