Foreign National Arrested at Durban Home Affairs Offices Following Alleged Threat Against March & March Leader
A Foreign national has been arrested at the Department of Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre on Moore Road in Durban on Tuesday following an alleged threat made against Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, the founder of the March & March movement.
According to police, the suspect was in a queue with other asylum seekers when he was allegedly overheard making remarks about harming Ngobese-Zuma. Her husband, Xolani Zuma, and police officers nearby reportedly heard the remarks and alerted law enforcement.
Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. He faces charges related to intimidation and incitement to violence.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions outside refugee reception centres in KwaZulu-Natal. March & March has staged several demonstrations outside the Moore Road and Che Guevara Road Home Affairs branches in recent weeks.
The friction follows a July 2026 Constitutional Court ruling that declared previous barriers to the asylum system unconstitutional. In response, the Department of Home Affairs issued a directive instructing refugee reception offices to accept asylum applications from individuals who entered South Africa irregularly. March & March has opposed the directive, arguing it undermines immigration enforcement.
Police are investigating the alleged threat. The suspect has not been convicted of any offence and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
