Tesla engineers found a clever way to reduce EV range loss in winter.
Instead of wasting energy generating heat, Tesla’s heat pump system recycles heat already produced by the motors, battery and electronics.
At the centre is the Octovalve, which manages heat between the battery, cabin, motors and outside air.
It can even extract heat from freezing outside air to warm the cabin.
The result is less energy wasted on heating and more left for driving.
The Model Y introduced this technology in 2020, and it’s now standard across Tesla’s range.
Cold weather still affects EV range, like it does with all cars, but clever engineering is making winter driving increasingly efficient.
And this is exactly why EV technology continues to improve.
