Russ Vought is Donald Trump's budget director and the most dangerous person you've never heard of. He helped write Project 2025, and he has spent years arguing that a president should be free to ignore spending laws he doesn't like.
Now he's doing exactly that.
Last night, with no vote and no debate, Trump canceled nearly $1 billion that Congress passed and he had previously signed into law.
The trick is called a "pocket rescission."
The White House sits on money for months, then sends Congress a cancellation request so late in the fiscal year that the funds simply expire on September 30.
Last year they used the same move to wipe out $4.9 billion.
I sit on the House Appropriations Committee. Under the Constitution, Congress decides how taxpayer dollars are spent. Republicans and Democrats negotiated these bills in good faith.
If a president can erase any spending law by running out the clock, the power of the purse means nothing.
I'll keep fighting to restore these funds and close this loophole for good. Congress writes the budget, and it's time more of my Republican colleagues stood up and said so.

Diesel just hit the highest price ever recorded, more than $3 higher than a year ago.
That hits our farmers first. Tractors burn diesel all day during harvest, and so do the trucks that carry crops to market. It's hard to plan a season when your biggest cost keeps climbing week after week.
And those costs don't stay on the farm.
They show up at the grocery store for all of us.
Because of the unauthorized war in Iran, oil from the Middle East still isn't flowing at full strength, and diesel is taking the hardest hit.
The House has now voted multiple times to end this war, with Democrats and a handful of Republicans voting together. 50.
Whatever your party, we should all want the people who grow our food to be able to afford to grow it.
Congress must take back its constitutional role, end this war, and get to work bringing fuel prices down.

This week the Trump administration ran a 30-second campaign spot on Fox News and Newsmax, labeled "Paid for by the U.S. Government."
This kind of propaganda using taxpayer dollars is unacceptable and very likely illegal.
An actual PSA teaches people something useful.
This shameless ad’s only purpose is to make Trump look good, just weeks before an election.
As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I believe this ad crosses a clear line, and federal employees who helped produce it may have run afoul of the Hatch Act as well.

Today the Supreme Court allowed the use of a revamped Homeland Security database called SAVE to check the citizenship of people on their voter rolls.
A federal judge blocked the expanded database in June, ruling it broke federal privacy laws and warning it could lead to eligible voters being wrongly removed.
Today's order pauses that ruling while the case continues.
Our Constitution gives states the lead role in running elections, and using SAVE is each state's choice. Federal law also bars most states from systematic purges in the last 90 days before an election.
That leaves the part only you control.
Election Day is November 3. Confirm your registration is current, make a plan to vote, and help a friend do the same.

Yesterday, when I heard Donald Trump address the UN and say "to the victor goes the spoils," I thought about my grandfather who served in World War II.
Conquest for plunder was the logic of the adversaries the Greatest Generation defeated.
When World War II ended, America had every chance to take whatever it wanted from a broken world.
Instead, we helped rebuild former enemies, wrote rules that applied to the strong and weak alike, and led the effort to create the UN so borders would no longer be redrawn by force.
That choice made us the world's most powerful and respected nation for 80 years.
Americans of both parties built that order, from Truman and Eisenhower to Reagan. I want my kids and grandkids to inherit an America the world still trusts, one that leads by building partnerships and keeping its word.
That is our America worth defending, and it is the legacy we owe the Greatest Generation.
It's a legacy I'll never stop fighting for.

This is totally illegal and unconstitutional.
A federal judge already ruled a president cannot ban journalists for what they write. Trump is doing it anyway, in plain sight, with no pretense that this is anything but retaliation.
Let the First Amendment bend under Trump and it will not hold for whoever sits in that office next, in either party. A president doesn’t get to pick which reporters are allowed in the room.
I’ll keep standing with every newsroom that walked out instead of going along with it.

Over the weekend, ICE agents fired at a moving vehicle and shot a 28-year-old man who works for DoorDash. His attorney says he is legally in this country with a valid work permit.
ICE detained him anyway.
We don't have every fact yet. But if his attorney's account holds up, this fits a pattern that needs to stop.
Our immigration system is broken, and Stephen Miller's reckless, unaccountable enforcement is making it worse.
I cosponsored the bipartisan DIGNITY Act because we need a border that is secure and an immigration system built on American values rather than fear and deportation numbers.
Congress needs to pass it.

He wants to turn every federal science grant into a political loyalty test. His plan would make funding for research depend on one thing: whether it “advances the President’s policy priorities.”
Not whether it works.
Not whether Congress voted for it.
Whether it pleases Trump.
This is the appropriations power. It belongs to Congress and to the people.
This is about whether Congress still exists as a coequal branch, or whether we have quietly surrendered the purse to an unelected extremist hack who holds the Constitution in contempt.

Donald Trump says the only guardrail America needs on AI is a "High IQ” president. Translation, just trust him and do nothing.
What he's offering is his own discretion, which conveniently binds no one and expires when he leaves. What he doesn’t say is this is worth a fortune to him.
Trump’s accounts have made nearly 30,000 stock trades since he took office, including chipmakers and data center suppliers whose value moves with whatever he says about AI. His sons are pouring money into AI startups and data centers.
He wants to be the safeguard against the industry he's deeply invested in.
Either we end the corruption or the corruption will be the end of us.

Don Jr. took hundreds of thousands of dollars from Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to Putin, for his extravagant wedding in the Bahamas.
Now, we're told he paid it back.
Who told us? His father, in the Oval Office, who said the money had been repaid and then, moments later, said it was still being repaid. Don Jr.'s own statement called Kremlev's money an extraordinarily generous gift from a friend and made no mention of giving it back.
This all just raises more questions than it answers.
What was Kremlev hoping to buy?
What did the president know about this, and when did he know it?

I have the honor to represent thousands of Marines, Sailors and families who serve. I take nothing about their safety lightly.
When the Washington Post reported Friday that at least 22 Americans have died in the Iran war, four more than the Pentagon has acknowledged, that demands a serious answer.
Instead, Pete Hegseth gave us a social media post calling the report disgusting and fake and comparing the Washington Post to Iranian state media.
Hegseth hasn't held a press briefing at the Pentagon in several months.
This follows a troubling pattern. In July, the Pentagon's own public database dropped four service members whose deaths the department had already announced. In August, a government official described the new counting method as designed to obscure the count. This week the database lowered its numbers and then stopped updating altogether. Strikes since May are being filed as overseas operations rather than as part of this war.
Military families and the American people deserve an accurate accounting and a straight answer about what we are doing in Iran. I will keep asking tough questions for as long as it takes.

Two 17-year-olds who say they were on their way to enlist in the Marines were pepper sprayed and detained for eight hours by ICE agents in Texas, after one was allegedly told "your parents can't help you now."
Whatever the full story turns out to be, this is becoming a pattern.
Military families and citizens caught up in enforcement sweeps, and parents of deployed service members detained.
Our immigration system is broken, and unaccountable enforcement is making things worse. That is exactly why I cosponsored the bipartisan DIGNITY Act, to secure the border, hold agencies accountable, and build an immigration system that reflects American values instead of fear.
