संस्कृत प्राचीन, प्राकृत-पालि नवीन भाषावैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से यह तथ्य निर्विवाद है कि संस्कृत भाषा प्राकृत और पालि की अपेक्षा अधिक प्राचीन है।

संस्कृत श, ष, स → पाळि स, स, स प्राचीन भारतीय आर्य भाषा (Old Indo-Aryan) संस्कृत में तालव्य श, मूर्धन्य ष, और दन्त्य स का भेद है, पर मध्य भारतीय आर्य भाषा (Middle Indo-Aryan) पाळि में यह भेद नहीं है अपितु केवल दन्त्य स है। आइए जानते हैं प्राचीन भाषा संस्कृत के श, ष, और स वाले शब्द मध्य भाषा पाळि  में कैसे बोले जाते हैं। Sanskrit ś, ṣ, s → Pāli s, s, s In Sanskrit, an Old Indo-Aryan language, there is a distinction between the palatal ś, the retroflex ṣ, and the dental s. However, in Pāli, a Middle Indo-Aryan language, this distinction is absent; only the dental s occurs. Let us explore how words containing ś, ṣ, and s in the old language Sanskrit are pronounced in the middle language Pāli.
