Sir Delius - WIN @ 2.70 (5u)
Aeliana - WIN @ 4.00 (3u)
Moving day. The Turnbull is one of the most important races of the Spring as it plays an influential role for the major cups ahead. The reigning champion returns 2nd up on a path to history, looking to become the first back-to-back winner since the great Winx. His first-up run in the Makybe Diva suggested he is right on track, and getting back to his preferred 2000m trip makes him the horse to beat. He is one of a few who should relish the wet conditions too.
Aeliana was poor 1st up in the Winx but powered home strongly behind Autumn Glow in the 7 Stakes. She beat Sir Delius in the Ranvet earlier this year. James McDonald had Aeliana positioned closer to the speed where she could track the tempo comfortably, whereas Sir Delius had to track into the race from further back as the sprint quickened off a slow speed. Moving from Rosehill to Flemington's expansive 2000m course will suit Sir Delius's sustained momentum and true staying power. While Aeliana will again enjoy an economical run from barrier 2, the long Flemington straight gives Sir Delius the ideal runway to turn the tables. I think if there's genuine pace unlike their tactical Ranvet clash, the favorite can overcome the barrier and reverse the result.
I like Half Yours on a Heavy deck alot. He draws wide and probably needs further to show his absolute best but I think if it's wet enough he's a real smokey for a place.
Light Infantry Man is a big price for a dual Group 1 winner over this trip, one of those being the Australian Cup earlier this year. Not sure if he's come back as well but the stable have a habit of switching things on when it matters. Should be dictating the pace early.
