First, Ukraine is not an ally in any way, shape or form. Nor are we bound to protect them.

We never agreed that we would defend Ukraine if they gave up the USSR's nuclear weapons stationed in their country.
Please don’t be ignorant and read the actual Budapest Memorandum. It’s only 2 pages, it will only take a minute.
Here is the important part, Article 4: The only thing we told Ukraine we would do is to bring any aggression up to the UN Security Council.
We, in fact, did this in February 2022, but Russia vetoed it.
