Director, Ms Muhusina Abdul Rahman, represented the Maldives at the 8th Technical Meeting of the Asia Protected Area Partnership (APAP) in Sabah, Malaysia. The thematic area for discussion included delivering quality 30x30 in Asia through partnerships, Innovation and Effective Area-Based Conservation. The APAP is a regional platform where governments and partner organizations can share experiences, collaborate and collectively address the challenges regarding protected and conserved areas.

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and the Environment Regulatory Authority (ERA) are taking part in the Global Ecosystems Atlas Maldives Accelerator Final Workshop, held at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, from 22 to 24 September 2026. Organized with the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Global Ecology Lab located in the College of Science and Engineering at James Cook University, Australia, the workshop brings together Maldivian experts and international partners to finalize the Maldives national ecosystem map. Over three days, the team has reviewed the latest version of the map, drawing on local knowledge of our terrestrial ecosystems. Participants also contributed new training data to sharpen the accuracy of the map, and helped ensure it reflects the local language and cultural heritage of the Maldives. The workshop closes with plans for how the data will be documented, delivered and made available to the public. This map will give the Maldives a consistent, science-based picture of its ecosystems. It will support conservation planning, climate resilience and informed decision making across the country. The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy held discussions with the M. Veyvah Council regarding key environmental concerns faced by the island, including issues related to coastal erosion. The discussions also covered waste management, with the Council providing insights and updates on waste management-related projects and initiatives currently planned or being implemented on the island.

As part of the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy’s initiative to strengthen technical capacity in the water and sewerage sector, the first batch of the National Certificate III in Plumbing Training Programme was officially launched today at the MWSC Auditorium, Malé. The programme aims to enhance the skills of water sector personnel and improve the operation, maintenance and sustainability of water and sanitation services across the Maldives. The programme was inaugurated by Hon. Ali Shareef, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, with participants comprising personnel working across the water sector. The training is delivered by the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT). The training is funded through the GCF Readiness Project, with financial support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and technical assistance from GIZ.
