No country hands over its national communications infrastructure because someone is rich, influential, or promises speed. The US wouldn’t. The EU wouldn’t. Neither would China, India, or Brazil. South Africa’s connectivity challenges are real, but pretending they are caused by regulation rather than decades of inequality, infrastructure gaps, and market concentration is intellectually lazy.
Honestly, after this saga, I don’t think Elon Musk will ever set foot in South Africa again 😂Imagine telling a global tech almost trillionaire who could fix rural connectivity overnight, “Sorry, you don’t qualify,” while citizens qualify daily for slow internet, social grants load-reductions and zero service delivery. Instead of rolling out solutions, we roll out regulations in the name of transformation. Instead of progress, we protect policies. No wonder innovators fly over us — South Africa is officially a no-signal zone for common sense. As Malema says "we are led by fools"

BREAKING: Europe is under a massive cyber attack, with supermarket fridges and freezers in Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland and Estonia all hacked today by raising temperatures to up to 50°C, destroying huge quantities of food, per Reuters. "Everything is destroyed," a sales manager in Sweden said, adding that "there has been a cyberattack and all our freezers reached 50 degrees." More than 40 supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected. "I only have two words for them: wake up, please, because there's something going on," a store manager in Belgium said. This follows a similar cyberattack last month that hit hundreds of supermarkets in France, raising freezers as high as 80°C and causing major food losses. It also comes after freezers at 6 US military bases mysteriously malfunctioned, spoiling large quantities of food, which the Pentagon is investigating as a suspected cyberattack.

Something happened at Cape Town airport that got me thinking about the Kenyan passport. I was asked to interpret for seven Kenyan passport holders. Only 2 could speak Kiswahili, prompting officers to question their identities. Are our passport verification systems strong enough?

Our investigators are observing never-seen-before laundering patterns with the stolen funds from the Binance exploit. Thousands of transactions in a short period suggest that the attackers are using automation to obscure the trail of funds. Rather than simply moving funds onward, they repeatedly circulate them among addresses, often sending funds back to addresses involved earlier in the sequence. The Bianance hack money is frozen. Yep. But the hackers went to aave BEFORE it was frozen and took a loan against it in ETH. So the frozen USDT is sitting in a loan that obviously will never be paid back and they have the clean ETH. They knew it could be frozen so they had already prepared for it. There are levels to the hacking game and we may have found the newest boss

This is getting crazier. A poisoned Claude Code extension in the Cursor marketplace just compromised up to 5,000 developers. Local AI coding tools have full read access to your .env files, SSH keys, and terminal execution by design. Developers hand them the keys to the kingdom voluntarily. This is how the Binance signing pipeline got breached. If you own the dev’s IDE, you own the KMS orchestration, the API tokens, and the hot wallets. The next multi-billion-dollar exploit won’t come from a smart contract bug. It will come from a VS Code plugin. Maybe it’s time to continue working on the sandbox. github.com/xbtoshi/cli-sandb…
We identified a security incident affecting a modified Claude Code VS Code extension accessed through our Cursor IDE extension marketplace, impacting at most 5,000 users. This malicious version of the extension was not developed by Anthropic. It does not impact other extensions downloaded from the cursor.com/marketplace, Grok Bot, Grok or our other SpaceXSI products. In response, we took down our extension marketplace this afternoon, worked with relevant providers to neutralize the malware, and have reinstated the marketplace after confirming there is no further risk. If affected, please review instructions in this blog post to understand how to find the malicious package and establish a path to mitigate any potential impact. We are asking all customers update to Claude Code for VS Code version 2.1.314: cursor.com/blog/claude-code-…

🇲🇿 🚨 MOZAMBIQUE: ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE (PGR) DATA, 158K FILES / 22 GB, ALLEGEDLY FOR SALE A threat actor on an underground forum claims to be selling data from Mozambique's Procuradoria-Geral da República (PGR), the Office of the Attorney General that heads the country's public prosecution service. The listing allegedly involves: * 158,511 files (advertised as "155k") * About 22 GB of data * Material from the public justice system * Price: "make an offer" The claim has not been independently verified. ⚠️ Analyst Note: The post does not list file types or record fields, so it is unclear whether this covers case files, prosecutors' internal documents or citizen complaints. If authentic, prosecution-service files could expose witnesses, suspects and investigative details, creating risks well beyond ordinary data theft, including intimidation and corruption-related abuse. PGR has not confirmed an incident. Unverified threat-actor claim, NOT confirmation of a breach. Source: this is for subscribers only. Your bank app showed your salary to strangers, and nobody told you. The @InforegulatorSA just fined @FNBSA R1M under POPIA. A misconfigured app setting allowed 696 customers to view the home loan applications of 88 others, including their incomes, addresses, and, in 9 cases, account numbers. What makes it worse is that two customers flagged it in 2022. However, FNB treated each as a one-off, never reported it and didn’t fix it. The Regulator also caught FNB collecting personal data from newspapers and retaining some records indefinitely without a legal basis. Meanwhile, other SA banks drew a line in the sand on AI agents this week. So, / @CapitecBankSA says no third-party AI agents, screen-scrapers allowed / @AbsaSouthAfrica says if you share your login with an AI and lose money, you may be held liable. / FNB says it does not yet allow third-party AI agents to access customer accounts or make transactions; however, they are building a framework for approved AI assistants with a per-action consent / @Discovery_SA says it doesn’t currently allow AI agents into accounts Big ups to @InforegulatorSA. They're really busy. Other relevant regulatory entities really need to catch up and set direction. Otherwise, the private sector, banks in this case, will do as they please. In the EU, they don't play games. For now, the message to fintech founders is clear. Build on consent-based APIs, not shared passwords. Would you let an AI agent transact in your account?
