In Gaza’s Displacement Camps, Even Waking Up Is a Struggle!
As the cold weather sets in, life in Gaza’s displacement camps becomes even harder. Just to fill a water container, you have to wake up at 5:30 a.m. to this sound, after a long, sleepless night.
You haven’t been able to rest, not because you don’t want to sleep, but because the sounds of Israeli surveillance drones, artillery shelling, airstrikes, warplanes overhead, and gunfire leave you no chance to find peace.
Imagine spending the entire night gripped by fear and anxiety, listening to sounds that could bring death at any moment. Then, at dawn, you wake up to begin the search for one of life’s most basic necessities: water.
This is just one of the many hardships endured by our people in Gaza’s displacement camps. Their suffering begins the moment they open their eyes and continues long after the sun sets. Behind every small detail of daily life lies a story of exhaustion and deprivation: finding water, securing food, and trying to protect children from the cold in tents that offer little protection from either the summer heat or the winter chill.
In Gaza, waking up no longer means the beginning of a new day. It means the beginning of another battle to stay alive.
This is the reality of displacement that rarely appears in photographs or news reports: the harsh daily struggles endured by thousands of people who are trying to hold on to whatever remains of their lives and dignity, amid conditions no human being should ever have to endure. 💔🇵🇸
