Getting cancer, having a heart attack, needing emergency surgery, or watching your kid end up in the hospital is bad enough. Nobody should survive the medical crisis only to find out the financial crisis is just getting started. My healthcare reform would strengthen protections against abusive medical-debt collection, require clearer billing, improve notice before accounts get shipped off to collections, and create realistic payment options for people dealing with legitimate financial hardship. That does not mean pretending healthcare is free. Hospitals and providers deserve to be paid for legitimate care. Patients also deserve to know what the hell they are being charged for, why they owe it, what assistance is available, and what options they have before paperwork, fees, collections, and legal threats start piling up.
