Gruau was a genius of illustration - his ‘patte’ (paw mark= style) immediately recognisable. I once interviewed him for a magazine and he spoke wonderfully about elegance and sprezzatura as important social values (which he noticed with some sadness were receding in the 1990s).

One rejection, as far as we can tell, and he stopped trying to publish it. Many other things - Myles, An Béal Bocht, plays etc. - followed... but no more novels in English until The Hard Life twenty years later. It looks as if O'Nolan was desperate for money and praise

Born #OTD 1939 in Carlisle, (Baron) Melvyn Bragg. Working class childhood, grammar school education led into the BBC, long career in broadcasting, notably The South Bank Show and In Our Time, scriptwriter and author. W H Smith Literary Award in 2000 for The Soldier’s Return.
