This one sucks... Phantom of the Paradise IS my favourite movie... and Beef is a big part of that... Gerrit's portrayal of him was funny and acerbic, pointing fingers at the drug a d threat fuelled Svengali producer based culture that still runs rampant today, while also showing the image is often very far from the truth... The funniest moment is if course the Psycho shower spoof followed by his flamboyant leaving...before being bullied tragically and fatally into his magnum opus and final performance. While Gerrit didn't sing "Life at Last", the performance was all his...including the hilarious death. But he was also a well loved character actor in many other De Palma movies like Greetings and Hi Mom, later in popular fare like Demon Seed, Used Cars, Police Academy 6 and Child's Play 2...not to mention the title role in the infamously so bad it's good CHUD 2: Bud The CHUD. DVD ordered, 20 quid well spent. My favourite Tim role is his most forgotten one. Times Square. This late Punk era rock opera saw him in a rareish Good Guyish role as the DJ to champions two homeless teens punk musician dreams in late '79 NYC. It was a vehicle for breakout star of the day Trini Alvarado and an introduction for Robin Johnson, whose song Damn Dog was later covered by the Manic Street Preachers on Generation Terrorists... The rest of the soundtrack was amazing, too cuts from The Cars, Roxy Music and early cut from The Cure... and the two leads belting out some great late Punk anthems. As Influential as Rocky Horror was, I saw this first...and it made me want to be in a band as a kid in the 80's...and when I realised the Manics were doing THAT Damn Dog... I seriously started singing as a teen... I saw Clue and IT tonight, gotta wait a week or so for this to arrive but will be happy to revisit...
