The UK government wants to legalise training AI on people's creative work without a licence. They propose letting creators 'opt out' - but opt-outs are rarely taken up, as most people don't realise they have the option. AI companies should be required to get actual, opt-*in* consent if they want to train models on people's life's work - models that will compete with those people. The govt's proposal would be an upending of copyright law that would have terrible consequences for the UK's creative industries. @stokel is spot on in the Guardian today.
