Observation:
The best ideas usually come from quiet voices.
This isn't universally true, but it generally is. I've been thinking about why and came up with 10 reasons.
I call them the "superpowers" of introverts:
1. Self-awareness
Introverts tend to be introspective. They reflect on who they are and how they think. They observe themselves as much as others. The result: a heightened sense of self-awareness.
2. Active Listening
Introverts tend to be good listeners. They pay attention to: words, tonality, body language, what’s unspoken. They ask questions. They listen to understand before being understood.
3. Empathy
Introverts tend to be empathetic. They’re generally more attuned to the emotions of others. Because they ask questions and listen, they learn more about others. This drives a deeper sense of empathy.
4. Attention to detail
Introverts are often detail-oriented. They tend to be meticulous in their work. They value precision, accuracy and quality. While sometimes this can be a weakness, it’s usually an overwhelming strength.
5. Creativity
Introverts tend to be more creative. They’re more likely to have creative passions such as writing, art and music. They find joy in getting lost in a creative hobby. This adds richness to their lives and develops their creative thinking.
6. Thoughtfulness
Introverts tend to be highly thoughtful. They process information deeply and carefully. They see and value nuance. They care about handling things well. They speak and act deliberately.
7. Observation
Introverts tend to be keen observers. They read the room. They pick up on visual cues. They can sense the environment. This gives them a treasure trove of helpful information when working within a team.
8. Curiosity
Introverts tend to be curious. They want to know about the world around them. They leverage their observation, question asking and listening skills. An insatiable desire to learn drives them. They care more about being interested than being interesting.
9. Deep Thinking
Introverts are typically deep thinkers. They contemplate. They can sustain focus. They aren’t easily distracted. Deep work is their comfort zone, which makes them great problem-solvers.
10. Genuine Relationships
Introverts tend to be fantastic relationship builders. They combine all of these skills with compassion for people. They value others and want others to feel valued. Rather than having surface-level relationships, they build bonds a mile deep.
–
Obviously, everyone is unique. Not all introverts have all of these skills, and many extroverts do.
But I think there's a lot we can learn.
Key takeaways:
1. Pay attention to the "quiet" voices in the room
2. Create space for those voices to speak up
3. Don't assume the loudest idea is the best
4. Engage introverts in more "natural" settings (eg. 1:1 or small groups)
5. Build some of these traits into the values and culture of your organization
