Not a game, it was a 'research project'. One little guy in a three-story house on your screen. He ate, slept, played the piano, typed you letters, and got mad if you ignored him. Before The Sims, this was the whole idea. Who else had Little People living in their Commodore64?

On this day in 1986 (Sept 25th) Sega put OutRun in Japanese arcades. Not a race with a podium. A red Ferrari, a girl in the passenger seat, five roads that split, a timer that does not care how pretty the coastline looks. You pick a route, you chase the horizon. Which is why the Michael Bay / Sydney Sweeney movie is such a funny thing. The game barely has a story. Bay’s whole career is story, explosions, sunlight hitting metal. Sweeney’s producing, not even confirmed as the blonde in the car yet, and nobody’s said what the film is actually about. Cannonball Run with a Testarossa? A couple on the run? Two hours of drift and lens flare? I am still intrigued about this upcoming movie. If you played OutRun in the arcade, which 8-bit or 16-bit port actually came closest?

This Commodore 64 game has a 10/10 score. Manic Miner 64DX is a 2019 C64 remake of Matthew Smith’s 1983 ZX Spectrum classic. Graham Axten (Toki) released it on 29 December 2019 as a free disk image on CSDb: csdb.dk/release/?id=185586 Manic Miner was one of the first games I played on a mate’s ZX Spectrum. I couldn’t wait to get it on my C64. Classic, addictive, and frustratingly hard. Have you played Toki’s remake? What did you think of it?
