They may not know the term aave but they do know how black Americans speak and that it’s not the same as other Americans. As someone who’s traveled while being BA I’ve heard many iterations of people impersonating aave to me directly in reaction to me being BA.
Most people don't know AAVE exist, they see English and what's most used and that's it.
Do you know what words in French slang are not french but Darija or lingala? You don't and if you learn french you will pick them up thinking is french because of how much they are used.
