Breaking news from El Paso, Illinois: the parish where Fulton Sheen was baptized has now officially been named Blessed Fulton Sheen Parish, the first parish in the world to bear his name following his beatification.

More than 700,000 people have gathered across Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées for Pope Leo’s open-air Mass in Paris. France—the “eldest daughter of the Church”—has shown its Catholic roots throughout this historic visit.

Thousands of pilgrims are gathered in Lourdes to welcome Pope Leo to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. His visit comes 18 years after the last papal pilgrimage to Lourdes: Benedict XVI visited in 2008 for the 150th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions to St. Bernadette. Pope Leo XIV venerates a thorn from Christ’s Crown of Thorns during his visit to Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The sacred relic, associated with the Crown placed on Christ during his Passion, is preserved among the treasures of Notre-Dame. The Holy Father paused before the relic in prayer during his historic Apostolic Journey to France after a visit to the Blessed Sacrament.

Seven years after a devastating fire nearly destroyed Notre-Dame, Pope Leo XIV entered the restored cathedral for a powerful moment of prayer. The Holy Father celebrated Vespers with bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated men and women, and seminarians, marking the first papal visit to Notre-Dame since the 2019 blaze.

Thousands gathered outside Notre-Dame to pray the Salve Regina with Pope Leo XIV before this beautiful silver statue of Our Lady and the Infant Jesus. Visibly moved, the Holy Father paused in prayer before an image that has accompanied Paris through generations. Commissioned in the early 19th century and crafted by goldsmith Charles-Nicolas Odiot, the statue survived being thrown from the archbishop’s palace during the riots of 1831 and later narrowly escaped being melted down. Crowned for Notre-Dame’s Assumption procession in 1929, it was carried in the cathedral’s processions until the devastating fire of 2019. Tonight, before thousands gathered in prayer, it stood once again as a sign of Mary’s enduring presence over Paris as Patroness of France.

Paris gave Pope Leo XIV a joyful welcome as thousands lined the streets for his first popemobile ride through the French capital. The Holy Father arrived Friday to begin a four-day apostolic journey through Paris, Lourdes, and Metz. This is his first visit to France as pope and the first papal visit to Paris since Benedict XVI’s 2008 trip.
